When your Google Assistant’s voice commands don’t work, it’s usually caused by a problem with the Google app. Some of the most common problems include incorrect permissions that prevent the Google app from accessing your microphone, accidentally disabling voice commands, and corrupting data in the app.

If your Google Assistant doesn’t accept voice commands, try each of the following fixes one at a time until it works again. If, after exhausting all of these fixes, it still doesn’t work, you may have to wait while Google addresses the specific issue you’re experiencing.

Make sure Google Voice has the appropriate permissions

The Google Assistant needs permission to access many different systems on your phone. For example, he needs to have access to a microphone or he won’t be able to hear your voice commands at all.

If Google Assistant voice commands aren’t working on your phone, the first thing you need to do is check permissions. If you find that any of the permissions are disabled, enabling them will likely fix the problem.

The Google Assistant works through the Google app, so you’ll need to make sure the Google app has access to your microphone at least if you want it to respond to your voice. If you want it to be able to do anything useful, make sure you have all permissions turned on.

Here’s how to access Google app permission settings:

  1. Set up Settings > Apps & notifications .

  2. In the app information list, tap Google .

  3. Tap Permissions .

  4. If any of the sliders are grayed out, tap it to make it slide to the right. Make sure all sliders are turned on and check if Google Assistant voice commands are working.

  5. If the Google Assistant still doesn’t respond to your voice, try restarting your phone after enabling all app permissions. If it still doesn’t work, make sure “Ok Google” is indeed turned on.

Make sure “OK Google” is turned on

The Google Assistant can accept both voice commands and text commands, so you can turn them off. If you want it to respond to voice commands, you need to make sure “Ok Google” is turned on in your Google app settings.

  1. Open the Google app and tap More.

Depending on the version of the Google app you have, you may see (three vertical dots) or ☰ (three vertical lines) and you may or may not see Learn more text.

  2. Tap Settings .

  3. Tap Voice .

  4. Make sure the slider switches to Access with Voice Match and Unlock with Voice Match are moved to the right. If any switch is to the left and grayed out, tap it.

You can save some time by tapping Retrain Voice Model during this time and retraining the voice model. Further instructions are available in the next section.

  5. Check if Google Assistant voice control is working. If he still doesn’t respond, practice your voice model.

Retrain Google Assistant Voice Model

In some cases, the Google Assistant voice commands don’t work because the Google Assistant just can’t understand you. It is based on what is called a voice model, which is simply a recording of you saying “OK Google” and “Hey Google” several times.

If the voice model is damaged or was recorded in a noisy place or by the previous owner of the phone, retraining the model usually fixes the problem.

Here’s how to re-learn the Google Assistant voice model:

  1. Open the Google app and tap Learn More . Then tap Settings > Voice .

These are exactly the same steps you took in the next section to enable the “OK Google” command. If you are still on this screen, you can skip this step.

  2. Tap Retrain voice model and enter the PIN or scan your fingerprint if prompted.

  3. Tap I agree .

  4. When prompted, say the indicated phrases.

Make sure each command is pronounced clearly. You can also move to a quiet place if there is a lot of ambient noise or other people are talking, which can have a negative effect on the accuracy of the voice model.

  5. If the voice model training session is successful, you will see a screen informing you of this effect. Tap end to complete the process.

  6. Check if the Google Assistant voice commands are working. If you’re still having problems, you may have a problem with the Google app.

Delete User Data and Cache from Google App

Google Assistant voice commands depend on the performance of the Google app, so problems with the Google app may be causing the voice commands to not work. In some cases, this type of problem can be solved by clearing the data and cache of the Google app. If that doesn’t work, you may need to uninstall Google App Updates and restore the app to the state it was in when you purchased your phone. At worst, you will have to wait for Google to provide a solution.

Here’s how to remove user data and cache from the Google app, and how to uninstall updates if this option is available on your phone:

  1. Open Settings the app and tap Apps & notifications .

  2. Tap Google .

  3. Tap Storage .

  4. Tap CLEAN STORAGE .

  5. Tap CLEAR ALL DATA .

  6. Tap OK and then tap Back button to return to the previous screen.

  7. Tap Clear memory , then tap Back button .

  8. Tap on (three vertical dots).

If you have an older version of Android or Google App, you may not see (three vertical dots) here. If you don’t see this menu, then you have no way to manually restore the Google app and will have to wait for Google to issue a fix.

  9. Tap Uninstall Updates .

  10. Tap OK .

  11. Check if the Google Assistant voice commands are working.

  12. If the Google Assistant voice commands still don’t work, download and install the latest version of the Google app. Go to the Google app in the Google Play Store and tap UPDATE .

  13. If your Google Assistant’s voice commands still don’t work, you’ll need to wait for Google to issue a fix. Visit the official Google Assistant support forum to report an issue and request additional help.
