Customer needs – above all

The Viro multidisciplinary engineering company is engaged in projects in the development of engineering products. Among its customers are both small enterprises and huge transnational corporations, including ASML, AKZO Nobel and Shell. Viro offers turnkey solutions, including the technical and economic justification of the project, sketch and technical design, calculations, commissioning and after-sales maintenance. The head office is located in Hengelo (Netherlands). The company has eight more branches. A single -level organizational structure contributes to the joint work of specialists of various profiles to complete satisfaction of customer needs. The branches of the company are located in Arnham, Ekhte, Gruningen and Omedingen (Netherlands), Osnabruk and Munich (Germany) and Graz (Austria).

According to the director of the Dutch office, Martin Dibbets, over the past ten years, the number of Viro personnel has increased from 80 to 600 people. Further business growth is promoted by the successful use of product management technology (PLM) from Siemens PLM Software, represented by NX ™, Simcenter ™ and TeamCenter ™ solutions.

Support for parallel design

Viro engineers know that the best way to comply with the deadlines is the optimization of development processes. One of the Viro methods used in the company is the parallel design and calculations.

“Previously, the calculations were connected only in the late stages of the project,” says Jacob Vlasma, director of the Viro branch in Hengelo Jacob Vlasma. “Because of this, making any changes to the design turned out to be expensive and led to a breakdown of the deadlines. We eliminated this problem by organizing the joint work of meters and designers from the very beginning – from the stage of development of requirements for the product. ”

Viro designers were trained in the use of CAE systems and use the acquired knowledge in their work. Now they have a clear understanding of the importance of calculations both for construction and to comply with the timing of the entire development process.

“When experts in automated design and engineering calculations work together from the very beginning, their effectiveness increases, and they create excellent design solutions,” explains Vlasma. “The use of NX and Simcenter allows you to easily switch between two operating modes. Both CAD- and CAE systems are used together as part of the same project. ”

According to Vlasm, such integration is the most significant advantage of Viro: The bunch of NX and Simcenter is the most powerful means of developing new products.

Simcenter implementation accelerates the development

Vlasma gives an example when a change in the direction of the wind led to a significant hypothermia of one side of the pipeline.

“We have used Simcenter 3D Flow to build temperature profiles with various wind directions. Then the temperature profiles and pressure distributions were transferred to the strength calculation system for assessing mechanical stresses and durability. ”

The calculation of the company performed a hydrodynamic analysis in the Simcenter 3D Flow and determined the distribution of temperature on the surface of the pipeline, on the basis of which thermal loads on the structure were calculated. As a result, deformations of the bellows of the bellows and arising mechanical stresses were determined.

“To solve the problem, we built fences around the pipeline, providing a more uniform distribution of wind load, which reduced the amplitude of the structural fluctuations and the level of mechanical stresses,” Vlasma recalls. “This is a great example of how Simcenter helped us complete the project faster and more efficiently compared to the use of other software tools that do not have such excellent integration as NX and Simcenter.”

For Viro engineers, the possibilities of synchronous modeling technology were especially useful. In 2008, a revolutionary synchronous technology appeared on the CAD/CAE systems market, which ensures the acceleration of design, amendment and effective re-use of the imported 3D CAD geometry.

“When customers send us design information (for example, in the format of STEP data exchange), we use the symcenter 3D functions of synchronous technology in the Simcenter 3D to prepare geometry for the construction of a finite -element mesh. For example, small roundings and protrusions are removed, ”says Vlasma. “In addition, when we use other CAE systems, we also use the possibilities of synchronous technology to prepare 3D geometry.” Vlasma claims: Synchronous technology is an effective tool that significantly accelerates the design processes.

Great customer support

The complete integration of Simcenter and NX CAD systems plays a crucial role at all stages of the product development process.

“The most powerful feature of Simcenter is that it combines many different modules needed to work on a project, from the fatigue strength analysis of complex mechanisms that we use in the design of marine cranes, to the modules for calculating pressure and temperatures in chemical vessels.” Vlasma says. Simcenter has all the functionality we need to solve our problems.

Vlasma adds that VIRO engineers often work under extremely tight deadlines: “The effective support from Siemens PLM Software has been very helpful. The Siemens technical support specialists are doing a great job. They are very familiar with our industry, they understand that we are working under tight deadlines, and they do everything to help us. Having that kind of technical support is very important to us.”

Clear employee communication and fast decision making

The Teamcenter system also provides great support to VIRO's product development processes.

“Working in Teamcenter, all employees receive accurate and up-to-date data,” says VIRO sector leader Jelmer Edens. “We see what changes our customer makes to the design, and the customer sees the changes we make. All VIRO engineers and customer employees work with the same information.”

This transparency ensures that employees communicate clearly and make smart decisions quickly during product development.

“This approach also increases the efficiency of all our customers,” notes Edens. “They have immediate access to our data and work more efficiently through the use of Teamcenter and integration with VIRO information systems.”

Dibbets sums it up: “The use of NX, Simcenter and Teamcenter at VIRO has improved the quality of our products. It is high quality that has ensured the rapid growth of the company over the past 10 years. We are looking forward to hiring over 150 more people who will use NX, Simcenter and Teamcenter.”
