Consideration for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, year B1

I recently visited my friends, parents of almost four-year-old twins … With the encouragement of my parents, the boys decided to paint something for me. Thanks to this, we had half an hour for uninterrupted conversations: mom, dad, uncle … (hmm … these are the moments when I thank you for the gift of celibacy) …

Getting the artwork you made was not easy. The boys made me guess what they had painted … Hmm, the pictures seemed similar, almost identical and could be called “Riding on the ice” or “Wall scratched with charcoal” … Guessing with prompting took a while and the twins took pity on me … In one picture it was me, and the second was the church! I showed these works of art to my friend, the priest and asked him how he liked the church and my portrait … Well, not everyone knows art …

The twins touched me not so much with their talent and imagination as with their perception of reality … I asked myself: what do I see when I look at reality? Because if I am to become like a child, it is probably also in looking at the world.

I reversed the question a bit: how does reality, God look at me? In other words, how am I supposed to view the world with non-earthly eyes?

Let’s look at today’s Gospel: Jesus multiplies the bread and feeds the hungry people.

When you look at them through the eyes of adults – well, it’s a nice party, so many people sit on the meadow and eat fresh bread and expensive fish. And that’s all…

Someone more insightful will notice the emotion and amazement on people’s faces, and maybe even ask: why?

Only a few will see Jesus who made it all in this crowd!

And this is our fundamental problem! We look at reality and we don’t see Christ! We see the surprised crowd, we experience how He feeds us and cares for us, but we don’t see Him.

See the world with the eyes of faith, see Christ who cares for me!

God who feeds man, God who cares about your needs, God who understands you. He opens his hand, feeds us to our heart’s content! Human matters are so important to Him that at that moment only you exist for Him. After the resurrection, Christ does not give desperate disciples a gift: “You did not grow up to my Gospel, you betrayed me …” He asks about basic needs: “Children, do you have anything to eat?” A phenomenal God of tenderness, a human God … What more do I need when He cares for me, for all of me?

But this concern has a name, the God of tenderness has an address! He embraces me, hugs me and embraces me in the community of the Church. The Church is just an extension of the hands of Christ who cares for me.

Where are you staying? In which picture of reality? A group of people eating fish? Sentimental singing and churching for as many impressions as possible?

Maybe the Church is boring, the mass is too long, and the parish priest is a grandmother? What is blocking your happiness, which is the straight path to God?

For just one week, see the world through God’s eyes, see Christ hugging you in the church. Do not let secondary and tertiary factors obscure Him! See Christ! Be careful!
