On Android it is also possible to change the search engine. After constant pressure from the European Commission for settings that previously did not allow the user to choose the search channel independently on devices with the Robot operating system, now Google is finally opening this option.

This is not a light decision given that in 2018 the company had to face a brave face of a fine of 4.24 billion euros from the EU for the competitive advantage associated with the Android operating system, which did not allow for change of search engine. After receiving a heavy fine, Google was forced to comply with Europe’s wishes, confirming in the last few hours a decisive change from a post on its official blog.

Android, how to change search engine

While waiting for the implementation of the new options that will end in the third quarter of this year, you can already act on the settings in a few simple steps to change at least your preferred search engine in Chrome for Android.

To change your selection and set up a new engine on your Big G smartphone, simply open the Chrome app on your phone or tablet by tapping the More icon (three dots) to the right of the address bar.

When you reach the “Basic settings” section, tap on the “Search engine” header and choose the one you want to use next. For simplicity, the ones you have used recently are already added to the list, allowing you to make a quick selection based on your habits.

Of course, the whole process is reversible: you can change your mind by choosing another of the many available on the web, or go back to Google at any time by following the same steps.

If you choose to leave Google as the default user, please note that unless you disable this feature, your device-provided location will be used for searches performed using the address bar. This option can be turned off by tapping the padlock to the left of the site url> Permissions> Location Access> Lock by Current Search Engine.

Android and Search, Google Comment

On the Big G blog, Oliver Bethell, Google’s legal director, commented on the company’s move, emphasizing the gesture of being open to its users: “We’ve always believed in offering choice to people and businesses and competing for the benefits of our services. We know people choose Google because is useful, not because there is no alternative “.

Bethell stressed openness to cooperation with the EU also in the future: “We will continue to invest in Google Search and Android to make them the most useful products available and we appreciate the open dialogue with the European Commission in these areas.”
