How to hire an apprentice – characteristics, under what conditions

More and more companies offer internships. In this way, some of them cover staff shortages during the holiday period. Others patch staff gaps with apprentices. There are also companies that give apprentices a chance to prove themselves and look for new employees among them.

There will always be many applications to the recruiting company, sometimes even hundreds, for an advertisement about the recruitment of apprentices. How to make both parties satisfied with the practice?

First, you need to identify who the company really needs and what it can offer the apprentice. For many young people, and they are mostly apprentices, the financial issues are important, but far more important are the skills they intend to acquire during the internship.

What are the differences ?: Internships and apprenticeships

If, during the internship, the trainee acquires certain skills that can be used in other companies, finding a candidate will not be a problem. However, it is worth knowing that self-respecting companies usually organize paid internships. Of course, no intern expects to be paid as much as that of a full-time employee, but pocket money is certainly welcome.

Where to find apprentices

Of course, the easiest way is to place an advertisement on one or more recruitment portals, then the response to the advertisement is almost guaranteed. When apprentices are to have specific skills or a certain profile expected by the company, it is worth looking for them at universities with a nature and specialization similar to the industry in which the company operates.

Such people will definitely be more likely to take up an apprenticeship in an enterprise that operates in the area they are interested in, and the companies themselves may be able to “catch” promising employees at this stage. It is no secret that students of some fields of study, such as telecommunications, take their first internships already in the first year of studies, while in the third year they usually cooperate – and not on the basis of internships – with serious companies, and often with international corporations.

How to organize internships

It is not enough to find a potential apprentice to hire him or her in the company. The apprenticeship must also be formalized, for example by a graduate apprenticeship contract. This type of agreement can be signed with a person who has already graduated from junior high school, but has not yet turned 30.

The contract should include provisions about the length of the intern’s work time, the duration of the internship (taking into account the fact that it cannot last longer than 3 months), as well as the type of work that he will perform. Additionally, the contract stipulates whether the internship will be paid or not.

Apprentice Salary

It cannot be higher than twice the minimum wage. However, the internship organizer does not have to pay social security contributions for the amounts paid out. In turn, the apprentice, if he does not exceed the statutory amount of earnings, will not lose the status of unemployed despite the received salary.

It should be remembered that the apprentice is not formally an employee, some provisions of the Labor Code apply to him. They mainly relate to working hours, overtime, work breaks, providing the apprentice with health and safety training and protective clothing.

Benefits for the apprentice

A person looking for an internship and apprenticeship should carefully check which type of enterprise they want to apply to. There is absolutely nothing wrong with free internships as long as the apprentice has other benefits from such cooperation. Of course, the biggest thing would be that, after completing the internship and checking out, the apprentice will receive an offer of employment. The minimum is the possibility of acquiring real knowledge and skills during the internship that can be used in your further professional career. You can brew coffee, move “papers” from place to place and play with a spreadsheet without leaving your home. However, there is no reason to let yourself be used as a free labor without hoping that it will bring any – even deferred – benefits.
