3. Come with your dog to the grooming salon for a familiarization visit

Good salons for the comfort of their customers offer these free visits to show dogs that a grooming salon is not a bad thing.

The introductory visit is short – it lasts a maximum of 15 minutes and during it only pleasant things for the dog happen – he gets a lot of delicious flavors, meets employees, can at his own pace look into every corner of the salon and get acquainted with the smells .

During the first familiarization visit, we do not brush the dog, cut the claws or clean the ears. It is supposed to be pure pleasure full of delicious treats and stroking.

It is worth making another short appointment right away, during which the groomer will perform several treatments such as cleaning the ears, gently shortening the claws, etc.

And by taking small steps and during short visits, we will gradually approach a comprehensive visit, including bathing, drying, brushing, cutting, clipping claws, cleaning ears.

There are many activities during such a comprehensive visit, so it is worth introducing your dog to each of them separately and in a calm atmosphere.

When we have done our homework in the form:

  • to gradually accustom the dog to care and touch,
  • brushing the hair regularly,
  • familiarization visits in a grooming salon;

and we are ready to sign up the dog for a comprehensive visit, there are other important points to remember.

4. Take your dog for a loooong walk before visiting the grooming salon

Make sure the dog takes care of its physiological needs before the visit. The nervousness at the grooming table often comes from the dog not having a chance to do so before the visit.

In addition to physiological issues, a walk is needed to run out and tire your pet.

After such a walk, he will have no energy to resist grooming treatments. Working with a calm animal is much easier than with a rested, energetic playboy.

You must also remember that groers work with sharp scissors. In the case of a dog that is a volcano of energy, it is much easier to cut or cut the skin.

For the comfort and safety of your dog and groomer, be sure to walk before your visit.

5. If your dog is allergic, inform your groomer about it!

Thanks to this information, the groomer will select mild, hypoallergenic cosmetics that will not irritate delicate skin. Groomerers often have cosmetics with a very simple, natural composition for sensitive four-legged people. These preparations will also be suitable for puppies.

Often vets recommend special medicated shampoos for delicate, sensitive skin. If you have such a shampoo for your dog, feel free to bring it to the grooming salon. Each groomer will agree to bathe the dog in such a specialized preparation if it will protect the dog from itching, reddening of the skin or rash.

If your dog suffers from a food allergy, for example, prepare treats that his body is used to. The groomer will be able to reward the dog for good behavior without exposing it to an allergic reaction.

6. Don’t visit the salon when your female dog is in heat

The intense smell of a female dog in heat can arouse agitation and frustration in males, who will be in the living room at the same time or even hours later.

A dog that gets excited about smells will be more anxious and uncooperative with the groomer.

In addition, a bitch’s hormone storm often changes her behavior: she can become irritable, more agitated and even aggressive.

It’s good not to expose your bitch to additional challenges and stress during this time.

If, however, it requires grooming and is in the heat of heat, be sure to inform the groomer about it and ask about the possibility of an appointment at this time. It is an expression of respect for employees and owners of other pets and responsibility for their dog.

7. If your dog does not like any treatment, be sure to inform the groomer about it

Quite a few dogs rebel when cutting claws. If we inform the groomer before the visit that the dog has a problem with accepting this treatment, he will have a chance to find a more comfortable way to perform it. In many salons, besides classic claws, grinders have special grinders.

Interestingly, often dogs that do not accept claws cutting their claws with grinders remain calm and patiently wait for the end of the activity.

Some animals, for example, are afraid of water and bathing is a great stress for them. If informed about it, the groomer can prepare to serve the more demanding client by asking a second person for help or, for example, by preparing a licking mat with a delicious pate or peanut butter.

In addition, a professional groomer, knowing that the dog does not accept a given treatment, will suggest how to work with him at home or refer him to a good behaviorist.

Be sure to inform the groomer when your dog may react nervously or aggressively. If you have a properly fitted muzzle – bring it with you to the salon. Thanks to these activities, the visit will be more comfortable and safe for everyone.

8.Important Vaccination Information

There is a provision in the regulations of grooming salons: “Every dog should have a health booklet with valid vaccination certificates”. This provision is designed to care for the welfare of both dogs and groomers.

Rabies is a very dangerous disease that can affect dogs and people. It is lethal, therefore in our country vaccination against rabies is obligatory and should be performed once a year.

There are approximately 10 different dogs in a grooming salon during one day. It is easy to guess that possible infectious diseases, such as kennel cough, distemper or parvovirosis, can spread very easily. Thanks to the required vaccinations, we protect puppies as well as weaker and older dogs from infections.

9. Please bring your dog to appointments and collect him on time after treatments!

Punctuality in a grooming salon is extremely important. One late customer may spoil the entire day’s appointment schedule. It is also not advisable to come to the salon too early. Some of the smaller lounges have no or very small waiting areas. A customer arriving too early for an appointment will distract the dog who is on the table and is being groomed.

This type of situation will also be very uncomfortable for your dog. Waiting in a strange place full of new smells and sounds may stress him unnecessarily.

If you made it to the salon before the scheduled time, take this time to walk and make sure your dog takes care of his physiological needs.

Punctuality is just as valuable when picking up your dog after the service is over. Make an appointment with the groomer on the phone. Let him inform you that the visit is ending and in a few minutes your pooch will be beautiful, fragrant and ready to go home or go for a walk.

Dogs waiting for hours and often barking are a real nuisance for both groomers and other four-legged clients.

Take care of the comfort of your dog, groomer and other clients – be punctual!
