However, the demographic low and the decreasing number of students mean that there are fewer classes in schools. Teachers’ unions are looking at the matter. On Monday, June 9, the Polish Teachers’ Union calculated the number of layoffs.
– According to the information we have received from our local departments, 328 teachers will have no work from September. In small municipalities the situation is good, worse for cities. The most difficult situation is in Kielce, where 211 teachers may lose their jobs – says Wanda Kołtunowicz, president of the Świętokrzyskie district of the Polish Teachers’ Union. No layoffs are planned in the Busko poviat, only three teachers may lose their jobs in the Starachowice poviat.

Kielce educators are reassured by Anita Stanisławska, deputy director of the department of education, culture and sport at the city hall in Kielce. – There will certainly not be so many layoffs – says Anita Stanisławska. For the time being, 61 people have been terminated under article 20 of the Teacher’s Charter (the headmaster has no hours for the teacher and terminates the teacher’s contract on this basis – ed.), Of which 22 have declared retirement. The remaining 150 people are teachers employed on a fixed-term basis. – The employment contract ends on August 31 and the directors will decide to extend it by then – explains Anita Stanisławska. Fixed-term contracts are valid mainly in schools in Kielce. According to the Polish Teachers’ Union, they are very rare apart from Kielce.
WRONG IN HIGH SCHOOLS
The difficult situation is in lower secondary schools, and the most difficult one in upper secondary schools. Only there the recruitment starts and at the beginning of July it will be known how many first classes will be created. – Teachers of subjects such as history are in a difficult situation, because the new core curriculum has limited the number of hours of this subject – says Anita Stanisławska. Similarly with geography or physics. – It is quite quiet in primary schools, where there should be no significant staff movements – says Anita Stanisławska. This is confirmed by trade unionists.

HOPE IN SIX YEARS
It is in primary schools that job offers may appear. It has to do with the reform of the “six-year-olds”. Half of the year is added to schools, because from September 1, 2014, in addition to seven-year-old children, children born before June 30, 2008 are obligatory in the first grade. At the moment, however, no one can say exactly how many first graders will arrive. Registration and counting of six-year-olds are still ongoing, and the situation will not be clarified until the beginning of September.
