The interest in engineering studies continues to grow, and computer science is breaking popularity records among the fields of study. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education summarized the results of this year’s recruitment for studies.

This information is important for students considering their choice of studies and their parents. It shows the trends in Polish higher education, where the competition is the most, and which universities are the most crowded.
WORK DECIDES
This year, technical universities, educating future engineers, are breaking popularity records. Most of these faculties attracted students. This is despite the fact that the number of students enrolled in the first year has fallen sharply this year. There were 478,000 of them in Poland, as much as 73,000 less than last year. For example, this year more than 17,000 people chose automation and robotics, 1.2 thousand more than last year, more than 18 thousand people decided to study mechanics and machine construction, a thousand more than a year ago. This is the result of the government’s actions, which introduced “commissioned faculties” tempting with scholarships. The majority of these majors are technical studies.

– It is also the effect of the labor market. Simply speaking, technical studies have a much greater chance of finding a job than those following humanities, ‘says professor Stanisław Adamczak, rector of the Kielce University of Technology. The crisis of the humanities is evidenced by the fact that in the top twenty of the most popular fields of study there is no longer any philology or history, and pedagogy has fallen beyond the top ten. On the other hand, law and studies related to economics and finances are still popular.
IT SHOW SEASON
The most popular field of study in Poland is still IT (31.8 thousand applicants), nearly two thousand more than a year ago. The development of new technologies means that IT specialists are needed in every company today. There is a place for them in industry, administration, education and even agriculture. A dairy cooperative will not sell its goods today without an active presence on the Internet. There is no indication that we will have a surplus of IT specialists in the near future. The most talented ones can count on working in foreign concerns. The brand of Polish IT is known and appreciated in the world.

MEDICINE AND CRIMINOLOGY
There are no medical faculties in the list of the most popular fields of study we present. Because these studies are very expensive, therefore they are strictly limited by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Every year, there are approximately three thousand places in the field of medicine at all Polish universities. Competition is fierce. There are 10 candidates (in Krakow) to thirty (in Bydgoszcz) for one place. We do not have this direction in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. There is a chance that it will start in two years. According to the data presented by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, it is the most difficult to get into… criminology. Such a field of study was opened at the University of Gdańsk. It turned out to be a “bull’s eye”. There were 45.7 people for one place.

DO NOT NEED TO GO
We have almost all popular fields of study, apart from medicine and psychology, in Kielce. Thus, in order to get an attractive education, you do not have to leave our region. It will probably bring considerable financial savings. And if someone decides to do it, the biggest problems will be getting to the Warsaw University of Technology (7.3 people for one place), then to the universities of technology in Gdańsk, Poznań and Łódź. The Krakow AGH University of Science and Technology, popular in our region, had 5.8 people for one place this year. Among the universities, the most difficult thing to get into is the University of Warsaw (4.3 people for one place).
