1. How does the font in the resume affect the employer?

When an employer opens your CV, they want to quickly find the most important information in it. Statistically, he has 6 seconds to do so.

What font in the CV will allow him to find your achievements and successes the fastest?

Readable first of all.

Unreadable font is difficult to scan with a pattern. You will lose precious seconds in which the employer could find the most important information! What font should I use to write my CV so that the employer learns as much as possible about you within 6 seconds?

Although the CV design should stand out, keep the font as simple as possible . This will make it easier for the employer to read.

Some people believe that the font on a CV can have a psychological effect on the reader. What?

  • original font in resume emphasizes creativity.
  • simple (universal) fonts in resume are best for positions where meticulousness is important employee.

According to Piotr Sosnowski, InterviewMe career expert, the font should be used to better present achievements and skills. This is its most important feature.

The resume on the left is written in Times New Roman font. Try to find the most important information about Marta in your CV within 6 seconds.

Now look at the CV on the right. This is a CV from our CV builder. We used the Arimo font in it. It is simple and legible, but at the same time it is not common.

Arimo combines the most important font elements in a CV: it increases the readability and improves the graphic appearance of the CV.

Comic Sans

Comic Sans has thousands of memes on the Internet. This is not a business font. It was designed for speech bubbles in comics. It is not professional, and therefore it will not emphasize your advantages and achievements as a candidate for a job.

Courier

Did you know Courier font has been hailed as the worst possible font for a CV? Courier looks as if you have typed your CV. Such a CV will not convince an employer in the 21st century.

Calibri

This a font that was appreciated by Microsoft itself. 10 years ago, Calibri became the default Microsoft Word font and replaced Times New Roman. If you write your CV in Word and you do not change the font, your CV will be in Calibri.

Advantage: The font is legible and looks professional.

Disadvantage: Calibri is the default font and therefore very popular. If you want to stand out from the crowd, look for lesser-known cv fonts.

Helvetica

The Helvetica font is considered to be one of the prettiest sans-serif, that is, without ornaments. You will see it in the picture below:

tahoma

The sans-serif font in the resume is very legible as it does not tire the employer’s eyesight. As a result, the employer is more likely to retain the template above your CV for longer.

According to research, sans-serif fonts look more innovative. If you’re looking for a job in new technologies, startups, etc., go for a sans-serif font.

czcionka helvetica

Advantage: The Helvetica font in the resume looks nice, legible and professional.

Disadvantage: Helvetica is not free . You have to pay to use it. Note: If you have a MacBook, you can use it for free.

Arial

Arial font looks almost like Helvetica. Plus, it’s free.

czcionka w cv arial

Advantage: Arial is the default font in Google Docs. It is readable and available on all computers. Thanks to this, it will be displayed correctly for the employer even if you send your CV in .doc.

Defect: You want your font to distinguish your CV from the CV other candidates? Arial is not a good choice due to its prevalence.

Georgia

Do you know that Georgia font is using the New York Times online edition? This way you can be sure that Georgia is a great font for a resume you open on a computer.

4. Does font size matter?

You already know what font for your CV will increase your chances of being interviewed. However, you need to know that the font should also be the correct size. The best size is 10-12. If the font is smaller, it will be hard for employers to read your CV.

Do not shrink the font size of the resume so that the resume fits on one page. This is a very common mistake of candidates! If you have several years of professional experience, it is better for your CV to be longer than 1 page, but legible.

If your font in your CV is greater than 12 points, your employer may consider that you have nothing to write on your CV. You lack achievements, successes or skills and fill the blank behind a large font.

Your CV is empty because you do not know what to write in the achievements section? See this article to find out how to describe your successes on a CV to increase your chances of employment.

5. Clause in your CV – which font is the best?

In addition to the content of your CV, i.e. a description of your achievements, skills and experience, you need to add a clause to your CV. The best font for a clause in your resume is the one you have used throughout your document.

You can use italics and reduce the font size so that the clause does not take up valuable space.

Make sure your CV includes the current clause. You can find its content in the article: What does the CV clause look like in 2020?

Now you know what font to write your CV in so that your employer can easily scan your document with a pattern. If the CV is legible, the employer will stay with it for a longer time, which will increase your chances of being invited to an interview.
