A student in a difficult financial situation may receive a social grant. We explain what happens to the amount paid if the scholarship holder starts working.

A student can get two types of scholarships: research and social. The first one receives very good academic results. The second is at his fingertips when he proves a bad financial situation at his home. It happens that a student gets both scholarships, but it is rare.

Assessment of the material situation

A student can get a social scholarship no matter what grades he / she receives. He must document his difficult financial situation. For example: a student comes from a small, poor village, from a family with many children, and his parents have the lowest income or do not work at all, but live on benefits granted by social services. So when a student goes to study in a larger city, and there is nothing to pay for, e.g. for dormitory, travel and books, may apply for a social scholarship.

Over PLN 650 per hand every month

Usually every year (it is an academic year, not a calendar year), the amount of the social grant changes and increases. In the 2014/2015 academic year (i.e. until September 30, 2015) it was PLN 592.8 net, and in the current academic year it is PLN 668.2. It sometimes happens that the university itself, from its own funds, awards a higher amount.

Critical Income

What matters is the income criterion and it is it that decides whether a student will receive this kind of material support. – This means that students and doctoral students whose monthly income per person in the family, determined in accordance with the provisions of the Act on Higher Education does not exceed PLN 668.2, are entitled to receive a social scholarship at the university. This will happen after meeting the statutory conditions and detailed criteria contained in the regulations for determining the amount, awarding and paying financial assistance benefits specified by the rector in consultation with the university body of the student self-government, and in the case of doctoral students with the university body of doctoral students’ self-government – the Ministry of Science and Higher Education provides.

What do you think ?: Why do graduates find it difficult to find a job

Students whose applications have been positively assessed by the university receive a monthly scholarship for 10 months (or for 9 months, but still for 10 months).

The student starts working

However, if a student takes up work, he receives remuneration, and this is tantamount to improving his financial situation. Usually, full-time and full-time students apply for a social scholarship. They also, as a rule, do not have permanent employment. They often take odd jobs, working several hours a month, only on weekends, earning, for example, about PLN 10 per hour.

The Ministry further informs: – A social scholarship may also be granted to students and doctoral students with an income exceeding the above-mentioned amount of PLN 668.2, provided that the university rector, in agreement with the student government and doctoral student government, determines a higher threshold, taking into account the possibilities of the financial support fund for students and PhD students. Currently, the maximum amount in this case is PLN 1043.9.

Scholarship received

When the student has more, there is nothing to count on the scholarship. Every six months, universities check whether the student’s situation has changed. When this changes in the meantime, the student is also obliged to notify the university that has been paying him the money so far that he has started work. This is because universities often use the following or a similar wording in their regulations on granting financial assistance: “Decisions on granting financial assistance may be changed without the student’s consent in the event that there are changes in the composition of the student’s family or in the amount of the student’s family income resulting in the loss of the right to to benefits or a change in their amount. ”

In the form you must specify, among others the income of individuals in the family and their own income. In addition, you should provide the earned income (remuneration of individual members of the family for work started in the current year) and lost income (the amount of earnings for work that individual family members had in the previous year, but no longer have this remuneration as of the date of filling out the application).

Honesty pays

Students who started working legally but did not notify the university and are still receiving a social grant may be in trouble. If the university finds out (or maybe verify the student by sending an inquiry to the tax office), the student will not only have to return the unduly collected amount, but may also have to pay penalty interest.

To work or to get

Students can calculate and calculate. They wonder whether to start a new job at all, since they will earn about the same as they would get a social grant. It is true that you can get a social grant on a regular basis and effortlessly. On the other hand, you need to earn money for your salary, and overstrain yourself. However, the advantage that prevails over the work of a student is: a person who already works during their studies, gains experience that is helpful in looking for employment as a graduate. It is even more a plus when a student works in a profession related to the field he chooses. You can apply for a social scholarship at most universities on an ongoing basis, i.e. throughout the year. Therefore, if it happens that a student worked until December last year, but has been unemployed since January, he may apply for a social grant at a selected university, e.g. from January to the end of the semester.
