2. FOUR PAWS IN A UNIFORM OR POLICE DOG

A dog “in uniform” can work in the police, municipal police or border guards. After training, which helps to determine which tasks a given animal is best suited for, it is assigned to a uniform – its new partner with whom it works on a daily basis.

Police dogs are used to track down drugs, criminals, smuggled goods or weapons. To perform such responsible tasks, quadrupeds must be extremely obedient and intelligent, as well as show great physical fitness. The appropriate character and temperament of the dog is also important – he must be aggressive only when called, i.e. in conjunction with the appropriate command, and be able to stop his aggression when called. Such features have, among others, German Shepherds, which is why this breed most often joins the police ranks.

3. IN THE PROTECTION OF NATURE – DOGS LOOKING FOR SAMPLES

It has been known for a long time that the sense of smell is one of the most important senses in dogs, so it is often used in unusual ways, for example to protect nature. Tetrapods are increasingly involved in the work of scientists as seekers of samples intended for research, thus helping to monitor rare species of animals, and sometimes also plants. The help of the dogs makes it possible to collect the samples in a shorter time, thanks to which their presence accelerates the field work. The tasks of such trained quadrupeds include, among others detecting the presence of rare species of animals, searching for the excrements of predators, e.g. wolves, as well as searching for dead animals or predator prey. Detection dogs, because this is what quadrupeds are called, which are looking for specific smells, very often also help in finding weapons, ammunition or parts of animals hidden by poachers.

4. ALWAYS AT YOUR SIDE – PSI GUIDES

Guide dogs help people with disabilities to function in the surrounding reality – they guide them across the street, open doors and support them in daily activities. A dog that acts as a guide should be extremely obedient, patient, respond to commands given by its owner, and show great physical strength that will enable it to perform tasks such as carrying shopping, bringing certain items or opening doors. Dogs of such breeds as: Labrador, Golden Retriever and Bernese Mountain Dog are perfect for this role.

5. MILITARY DOGS – RELIABLE BOMB DETECTORS

War quadrupeds help soldiers detect bombs and mines on the battlefield. Such dogs should be characterized by excellent sense of smell, great vigilance and react to commands given by the guardian, which is why German Shepherds are most often chosen for this type of task. However, it is believed that dogs of other breeds will also perform well in this role – but it is important that they have an excellent sense of smell and hunting instincts.

Military dogs have one more mission, however. They also very often support war veterans – helping them to return to civilian life and shake off all the experiences they experienced during the war.

6. CARE AND THERAPY IN ONE, OR DOG THERAPISTS

Therapy with dogs, i.e. dog therapy is a great way to improve the well-being of sick people. Dog therapists most often support the rehabilitation of children, which is why it is so important that the pets selected for this role show a lot of patience. The best in such tasks are Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel E.

Dog therapists can accompany sick people on a daily basis – not only do they keep the elderly and sick people in company, but thanks to their vigilance and appropriate training they can also sense changes in their owner’s well-being, e.g. impending epilepsy attacks . They are also perfect for supporting people with depression. The most frequently chosen dogs for this role are: Border Collie, Shar Pei or German Great Dane, although the most important thing is that the dog should be extremely alert and attached to the owner, which will allow him to sense the upcoming changes. Interestingly, not only purebred dogs, but also mongrels are perfect as a dog therapist and companion to sick people.
