One of the most important news issues in recent years has become a television series. Here’s where to watch and what it will be about

The Scazzi case is one of the most followed Italian stories in recent years. It all started in August 2010, when a girl went missing in Avetran, a town in the province of Taranto. Sarah Scazzi was her name, fifteen years old, and from that moment 42 days of searching began that led to the shocking truth.

This episode has been transformed into a documentary series “Sarah. The Girl from Avetrana”, which will debut on Sky Documentaries and will be available on NOW. Produced in Greenland, the show reconstructs all the details of a controversial court and media case, also thanks to interviews and testimonies. The series is inspired by the book of the same name written by Flavia Piccinni and Carmine Gazzanni and published by Fandango Libri in 2020. It consists of four episodes and focuses not only on the court events, but also on the manner in which the case was spectacularly presented, involving the entire city of Avetrana and in particular the victim’s family.

Sarah. Avetrana girl: what will the series show

Several aspects of the Scazzi affair will appear on the docu-serial. First of all, she wants to tell how she focused the attention of the media, where the search for truth at one point shifted into the background to focus on the more morbid aspects related to the city and family that participated in the tragedy.

In particular, she remembers the moment when the discovery of Sarah Scazzi’s body was announced live on TV, on the RAI show “Chi l’ha visto?”, where Concetta Serrano Spagnolo, the mother of the victim, was the guest.

Uncle Michele Misseri had his niece find the dead body. From that moment on, the village of Avetrana was even more targeted by the public. On February 21, 2017, the Supreme Court of Cassation sentenced Sabrina Misseri and Cosima Serrano, Sarah Scazzi’s cousin and aunt respectively, to life imprisonment for conspiracy to murder. Michele Misseri was also sentenced to eight years in prison for suppressing the body and contaminating the evidence, while his brother Carmine Misseri was convicted of hiding the body.

The evolution of events is told in detail in the series written by Flavia Piccinni, Carmine Gazzanni, Matteo Billi and Christian Letruria and directed by Christian Letruria. The episodes feature a series of exclusive interviews, such as the one with the florist Avetrana, a key witness in the trial who tells his side of the story years later.

Even though there are three sentences that straighten the story, someone is still struggling to confirm a different truth. Among them is Franco Coppi, Sabrina Misseri’s lawyer, who has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights.
