Announcement via the platform’s official blog: news also for pages. Facebook will hide posts from people who share conspiracies and fake news.

“Whether it is false or misleading content on COVID-19 and vaccines, climate change, elections or other topics, we make sure fewer people see disinformation in our apps.” After lengthy controversy that followed accusations that Facebook was too tolerant of disinformation, Mark Zuckerberg struck back.

The change that has already taken place was officially announced in a post on the official blog of the platform. The new guidelines were developed thanks to Facebook’s cooperation with fact-checkers, i.e. journalists who, through a series of cross-checks, are able to verify whether a given news is true.

What Facebook has chosen to do with messages deemed to be untrustworthy

Some of the activities aimed at improving the information ecosystem in the social network will be directed to the pages: “We want to give people more information before they like a page that has repeatedly shared content”, that has been assessed by fact-checkers, i.e. the validity of which is questionable , which enforces the series of cross-checks mentioned above.

“You’ll see a popup if you like one of these pages,” reads effe on the blue social blog. You can “click” on the alert to find out more, including whether fact-checkers claim that some of the posts “from the site in question” are “false”. Facebook will attach a link to this seal of approval which will give access to the platform’s policy on the accuracy and reliability of information.

Why Facebook will partially obscure social disseminators

The most important changes concern users whose behavior on social networks tends to share unfounded news. In the case of people spreading fake news, Facebook decided not only to disable a single post that journalists rated as untrustworthy, but also to partially disable all content sent or shared via a personal profile. In other words, your friends will be less likely to see the home page of someone marked as a fake news spreader.

“From now on, we will restrict the distribution of all news feed posts” from that person’s Facebook account “if they frequently share” content that has been evaluated by one of our fact-checking partners. ” Zuckerberg’s social network also points out that in the past he has already made a decision to reduce the “reach of a single news feed post” if it has “been exposed”. This last point applies to both Facebook and Instagram. The Stories platform is also owned by Zuckerberg.

In the latitudes of Menlo Park, in short, there is never a shortage of news: the company actually announced a community for neighbors and introduced a “digital marketplace” accessible directly from the platform.
