Checking the fiber speed, both FTTC and FTTH, is essential to accurately determine the potential of your connection. For this purpose, it is necessary to carry out a speed test, which is able to return precise data on the condition of the line. It is easy to make and can be carried out at home, completely independently, using the appropriate tools.
To run the speed test with correct results, you can rely on one of the services available on the network to monitor your connection. Of course, you need to follow a few steps to do this, otherwise the end values may be changed. It is also important to note that the data obtained do not necessarily relate to the actual speed that can be achieved by the fiber, but rather to the throughput at any given time. It is therefore a question of values that can change over time, which can be influenced by external factors, and that should be collected several times to get the most accurate picture of the situation.
Optical fiber speed test, tests on operators’ websites
The most accurate speed tests to consider are those provided by the operators themselves. All major operators in Italy such as Tim, Fastweb, Vodafone and Wind-Infostrada provide their customers with a speed test for checking the fiber connection, which is easily available on the company’s website.
The information provided in the speed test results allows you to check the speed of downloading and uploading data, as well as any delays, the so-called ping. In some cases the selection of the nearest server is done autonomously by test, in others it is possible to select it manually.

Ookla’s SpeedTest is one of the external services not directly managed by telephone operators, available both on the website and as an Android and iOS app. In addition to checking download / upload speeds and pings, it allows you to manually select a server – as well as automatically command one of them – and change the measurement units used in the assessment.

Created in collaboration with M-Lab, an American consortium that brings together companies and university research units to develop connection monitoring technology, the Big G speed test is able to test connections at speeds up to 700 Mb / s and has servers in Italy, thanks to which ensures precise and reliable results. Google Speed Test does not require installation of any tools or connection to other websites to be able to use it. Just go to the dedicated website and follow the information on the screen to quickly perform the speed test.
Fiber Speed Test: Which Negatively Affects Results
To check the actual accuracy of the speed test results, it is necessary to repeat the analysis several times, even on different days and at different times of the day. In fact, the number of computers connected to the network and the amount of data transferred can significantly affect the speed of your connection. The data from the test performed during the peak hours of the week often differs significantly from the data from the weekend during the quieter hours. The same goes for open programs (same goes for browser tabs) and pending transfers: it’s best to close everything before starting.
Other items are the geographic location of the server we are connecting to to perform the measurement; distance is a key factor in assessing the accuracy and reliability of a measurement. If possible, it is better to use Italian servers as close to your location as possible to avoid lag issues. There is also the question of limitations, not only physical, but also those that the provider introduces in the data transfer phase. If there were any blocks as you can imagine, it would inevitably affect the outcome.
