Simple tricks allow you to get the most out of a few years old smartphone without forcing you to buy a new one

After two years of use, the smartphone begins to show the first signs of “failure”: applications do not open as quickly as at the beginning, there is not enough space for taking new photos or recording videos, and the new models have a much more attractive design.

In such a situation, the only solution is to buy a new smartphone. But you don’t always have 600-700 € to buy one of the best models on the market. That is why you should try to extend the life of your smartphone as much as possible. Despite the fact that planned obsolescence encourages us to change the device every 2-3 years, it is possible to cope with the next few years using a few simple tricks. Your smartphone’s performance will gradually deteriorate, but you will still be able to take full advantage of its capabilities. Especially if you only use it to chat with friends and surf the internet. Here are four steps to help you extend the life of your smartphone.

Perform updates

Performing operating system and application updates can be a hassle, but necessary if you want to extend the life of your smartphone and protect it from viruses and malware. Updates ensure the stability of the device and allow you to use its full potential. The only caution you should take is when updating your operating system: it’s best to wait a few days before making any updates and check that other users have not experienced any problems. The only scenario where we advise against updating is if the phone is more than three or four years old: in this case, installing the update is harmful as it would consume memory and slow down the performance of the smartphone.

Proper battery charging

The battery is one of the most delicate parts of a smartphone and the one that is damaged most easily. It all depends on how well you charge your battery. To extend the life of the battery, follow a few simple rules: never fully discharge it, but charge it when its charge level is still 20%. The same goes for a full charge: it is detrimental to the health of the battery. It is better to disconnect it from the charger when its condition is around 90%. Heat and cold also affect battery life: always keep the battery between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Save your documents in the cloud

If your smartphone is at least two years old, it most likely has 16 GB or 32 GB of internal memory. This storage space is currently insufficient to accommodate all the photos and videos we take. If you’ve run out of memory and want to extend the life of your device, there are only two options: move everything to a microSD card (on phones that support it) or to cloud storage. The latter solution is preferable because it allows you to have documents always available.

Smartphone screen protection

One of the most vulnerable parts of a smartphone is undoubtedly the screen. It is also one of the most fragile. Therefore, it should be protected from falls and the elements. If you don’t want to change your smartphone after a year because of the display, you should use a screen protector. There are plenty of them on the market, also made of tempered glass.
