Readings for today

When I see a grimace of sadness on another person’s face, I ask – what happened? I ask him for the source. I want to know the beginning so that I can better understand what happened next. I am asking about the past so as not to wander in the present.

The power of God and Peter’s confession – “You are the Messiah …” – are the pictures painted on the Sunday Liturgy of the Word. We hear of the strong foundation on which the Church is planted. The same to whom some belong, others leave, still others are nearby. The foundation of this strange structure is strong not because of the material, but because of its builder, which is God Himself. When asking about the source of the events taking place before my eyes, I have to make an effort to reach the first cause, the breath that was before man and his works were (became). God the Creator, the mysterious builder who continues to strengthen a structure that “not even the gates of hell will prevail” (cf. Mt 16:18).

Builder of the world

In the Letter to the Romans the words are said: For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who was his counselor? (Rom 11:34). It is not without reason that a person hears repeated words like a refrain from time to time in order not to try to be equal with God. Since there is a clear exhortation (be it with the Creator’s praise or instruction), it always has a purpose.

Therefore, it seems that there is a tendency in man to ambitiously compete with God – who will know more and better, who will predict more … Sometimes we have childish disputes about the priority of omnipotence. The mentioned fragment of the Letter of St. Paul refers the reader to the Old Testament. There, in the Book of Isaiah (Is 40, 13) we read about these timid fights of creation with the Creator. In a poetic, metaphorical way, Isaiah asks, Who gave him directions in the role of adviser? To whom did he turn for advice and light (cf. Is 40:13). The Prophet gently embarrasses the reader. It shows that to this day we want to give directives to him who made the stars and calls them all by name (cf. Is 40:26). And God is patient and – as Romano Guardini wrote – “he begins anew the work of the world out of the chaos of human freedom”. What emerges from this God-ordered chaos of our hearts and thoughts? A map of the individual path of a person is drawn. If you tread carefully on it, you can feel the footsteps of many people who were walking ahead of us. And don’t let the similarity of roads scare us – it’s only the similarity of the source.

Power of the creatures – to walk in the footsteps

Anyone who claims that man is only a puppet in the hands of a mighty Creator is not true. Its power manifests itself in caring for people, not in coding a predetermined step and decision. God has given man the power to create. This power can contribute to success and failure. Defeat comes when we equate with God. Success – when we follow in His footsteps. When are we following the footsteps? Recently, I participated in the Eucharist, during which young people took their marriage vows. Following in the footsteps of God is, for example, standing face to face with someone and telling them about love, faithfulness and honesty. It is to live in such a way that no one will depart from God through us.
