A few years old iPhone can become as efficient as it used to be by replacing the battery. But how can you be sure?

The relatively short battery life of an iPhone that is more than a few years old, or even a relatively new iPhone that has been handled carelessly compared to the original battery life, could be a sign – and in fact almost always is – that a new battery is needed .

With the exception of the latest iPhones, Apple smartphones have never been known for their battery life, and while the days of a decade or so ago when you find a dozen people near airport charging points with an iPhone in hand are long gone, a phone three or four years old may need a new battery to return to its former glory. Often you do not need to replace the phone, just replace the battery. To be sure and to avoid unnecessary expenses, just check your iPhone’s battery health – here’s how.

Check iPhone battery cycles

There are several programs for checking how many charge and discharge cycles your iPhone battery has accumulated. Unfortunately, this is not an operation that can be performed directly from your phone: it requires “technological” computer support, but the good news is that it can be both Windows and Mac.

Among the programs available, we suggest you try iCopyBot, which has a version for Windows and one for Mac, and unlike the others, it is paid but you can get a free trial version. You can download it at this address (click on Download next to the iBackupBot version that fits our computer, be it Windows or Mac).

After connecting the iPhone to a PC or Mac with the original cable and downloading, installing and opening the said program, the name of the iPhone should appear in the lower left corner of the application, and the word More information in blue near the center of the screen.

Clicking on More Info opens another window with information about the charging and discharging cycles performed by the iPhone battery: this is the number next to CycleCount in the Battery section. A typical battery is designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity after 500 full charge and discharge cycles, “Apple writes,” and typically less than 80 percent (ie, around 500 cycles) is recommended to be replaced. “

Check iPhone battery status

Those who have an iPhone running iOS 11.3 or later and want to save time and steps can get iPhone battery health information directly from their phone. This is a much faster procedure, but the cycle count is lost.

So: if you want the most accurate indication it is best to use the previous method, but if you are satisfied with a rough but still comprehensive indication you can continue with the steps below.

For information about your iPhone’s battery health, go to Settings – Battery – Battery Status, where you’ll see the remaining capacity as a percentage of your phone’s new capacity, and just below it any performance limitations on your iPhone caused by a battery that needs to be replaced due to wear and tear.
