Jide, a Chinese startup, invented Remix OS, an operating system that turns your smartphone into a computer or pocket tablet

Imagine turning your Android smartphone into a computer. All you need to do is connect it to the keyboard, mouse and monitor. Such work is performed by a Beijing start-up Jide Technologies. He has announced a new version of his Android based operating system, Remix OS.

In practice, this is the same work that Microsoft has already done with Windows Continuum for its Windows Phone. However, the Jide Technologies project is based on Android devices. The feature will be called Remix and is expected to be available in the second half of 2017. For The Verge, Jide co-founder David Ko explained the concept of the work: “Imagine that you are working from your smartphone on a daily basis, once you get to work it is likely that some of the tasks you do cannot be transferred to the computer. like a portable, pocket-sized version of our computer at any time. Jide has been working on the project for about three years.

How it works

On PC, we’ll see everything in the Android interface. So we will have mobile windows, start menu and shortcuts. In addition to the classic taskbar. On the computer, we can use any application on our smartphone, from Clash of Clans to Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Although they are visible in a way more like Windows than Android. Alternatively, you can connect your smartphone directly to the display and use it as an Android TV.

Why should I use it?

Some may ask why use this system. In many companies, work cannot be done only at a desk, so it is necessary to ensure continuity in the use of devices. It is no coincidence that over time several companies have tried to create similar systems. Canonical some time ago tried convergence for Ubuntu. Asus, with the arrival of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, created its PadFone line. As already mentioned, Microsoft has also been moving in this direction recently. Remix OS will have one big advantage over all the others. It’s completely free and will be able to give you access to all Android apps on demand. According to David Ko, this system will increase the productivity of companies to such an extent that he imagines that soon there will no longer be desktop computers in the offices, but regular monitors. Employees will be able to connect their smartphones and go back to work thanks to the Jide operating system.

Not without a doubt

Experts say the new Jide operating system may have difficulties in development, especially in countries with more advanced technology. Various cloud services for sharing in the work environment seem to be more effective than the system developed by the Chinese start-up. So a key step will be to produce smartphones with Remix OS already on board and sell them on a large scale. Davide Ko said he already has contacts with many Chinese manufacturers in this area. The operating system could also be installed by the user, but in that case the Google Play Store would also have to be used. This requires specific knowledge, which can limit the market and complicate the introduction of the operating system to the market.
