Windows 10 is a good operating system, but it has drawbacks: here’s how to turn off notifications, block Cortana, or use a PIN instead of a password

Microsoft is constantly trying to improve Windows 10. But there is no perfect operating system. Even in the latest version from the IT giant from Redmond, we can find bugs and glitches.

Constant Windows 10 updates are good for security and functionality. For users, however, they can be a problem. Because blocking them is not always easy, especially if you use your computer for work and don’t read your notifications in time. Also, if the automatic update starts by itself, the computer will reboot and we will lose all data from the current session. However, do not despair. Windows 10 comes with an Active Hours feature that allows you to postpone or even schedule a system restart needed for updates.

Short Keys

In Windows 10, pressing the Shift key five times in a row will activate Quick Keys. This is a hotkey option that allows you to press a combination of keys one at a time instead of simultaneously. These are shortcuts that we usually make by pressing Ctrl and C or V for copy and paste. To disable this feature, go to Settings & nbspi select the disable option next to the words: “Enable persistent keys when SHIFT is pressed five times”.

Delete Unused Applications

There are many programs on your computer that you hardly ever use. Why keep keeping those programs that do nothing but take up our device’s memory? Fortunately, with Windows 10, some pre-installed apps can be removed. To do this, just go to Settings, then System, then Apps & Features. Here we will see a whole list of different installed applications and be able to decide which ones to remove.

Using Windows 10 with a local account

The first time we register our device, Microsoft asks us to create or enter credentials for our Windows account. This means one profile for the operating system as well as for Skype, Xbox Live and many other Redmond-based features such as One Drive. However, it is not necessary to register our profile to use the operating system. And even if we are already logged in, we can still change our account. To do this, just go to Settings, then Accounts, and finally your email address and account. Then click on Log in with a local account. Defect? Every time we log into a Microsoft service, we have to re-enter our credentials.

Use PIN

If we’re using a Microsoft account, we might consider entering a PIN instead of a password. This is a faster and safer way to protect your computer. To set a PIN, just go to the Start menu and click on your profile icon. This will open a page where we need to click on Add PIN. You can remove, change or recover the PIN in the same way.

Deactivate Cortana

You may or may not like Cortana, Microsoft’s voice assistant. In the latter case, we can even consider turning off artificial intelligence. Cortana can be hidden or disabled. In the first case, all you have to do is go to the app, select your voice assistant, and then hide Cortana. This is a more difficult way to disable Cortana on a computer and is not recommended for inexperienced users.

Goodbye notifications

Notifications in Windows 10 are a bit like Cortana, either you love them or you hate them. Fortunately, they can also be turned off. To do this, just go to Settings and then Notifications and Actions. From this page, we can block all notifications from coming, deselect all applications or remove only those that annoy us the most. We can also turn off the sound in the news.

Emoji in Windows 10

Can we do without emojis these days? The answer is of course no. But how do you enable them in the Windows 10 header? Simple. We go to the Notification Center and select the Tablet mode. After doing this, you will see the virtual keyboard icon among the icons at the bottom right. When you click on this icon, a keyboard will appear on the screen. To enter special symbols, press the 123 key, and to enter emoticons, press the smiley key. This is where we find the different emojis.
