1. What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is a document in which the person submitting it explains why they are applying for a position, promotion or raise . Most often, a cover letter is submitted to work as one of the application documents (next to the curriculum vitae).

A cover letter, unlike a job application, is submitted in response to an advertisement ( i.e. when the employer is recruiting).

Is sending a cover letter obligatory? Not always – not every employer requires it. However, it is definitely worth doing – this way you will show the employer that you really care about the position and do not send out identical application documents to many companies.

2. How do I write an effective cover letter?

A cover letter, like any formal document, must have a specific structure. What elements should it contain?

How to write a cover letter – the most important elements

  • current date and place
  • name and contact details of the candidate
  • employer’s details
  • salutation
  • introduction containing information for which position Applicant is applying
  • a briefing explaining why the candidate is an ideal candidate for the position
  • ending, making sure you are ready to meet in person
  • courtesy and signature at the bottom of the cover letter (handwritten if the cover letter is sent by post or as a scan)

However, proper structure is not enough. When writing a cover letter, you should first of all take care of its content. This is how you will distinguish yourself from other candidates.

Cover letter – how to write it to attract the employer?

  1. Address the letter of motivation to a specific person.

Employers do not like to receive “universal” cover letters that were created for the needs of many recruitments. In your cover letter, show that you have consciously selected a job offer. When addressing the letter, enter a specific recipient – e.g. a department manager or HR manager.

  1. Match the motivation letter to the job offer.

As MiT advisers emphasize, a cover letter should be tailored to a specific position and company. This is a key rule when creating application documents. In your cover letter, show that you meet most (or all) of the job requirements. It is also worth referring to the company’s values and goals and showing that you fully share them.

  1. In your information letter, focus on this what benefits you will bring to your employer.

Experts from the MyComputerCareer.edu educational website suggest that in your cover letter, focus on the benefits you can bring to your employer. You can, for example, describe how you will improve a process or increase sales. Show why you should be hired! This way you will stand out among candidates who describe only their competences and experience and are unable to put themselves in the role of an employer.

  1. In be specific and detailed on your cover letter.

In your cover letter it makes no sense to say that “you are resistant to stress” or that you are “ambitious”. Employers expect details. Give examples of specific situations where you have used your skills and experience. Show how your competences will translate into everyday duties. Explain why this position is important to you. It is also worth showing off specific successes and numbers (e.g. I reduced the company’s costs by 15%).

  1. In your cover letter, do not copy your CV .

A good cover letter is not a copy of your CV. In the curriculum vitae, the candidate only lists his skills, experience, achievements or acquired knowledge. A cover letter should build on this information and broaden it at the same time. This document is also a great opportunity to show your human face.

  1. Use the correct salutation in your cover letter.

    strong>

Also make sure that you include the correct salutation for your cover letter. This way you show respect to the recipient. Match the title of the recipient (e.g. Madam, Sir or Ladies and Gentlemen).

  1. Make sure you have your cover letter it wasn’t too long.

Keep your cover letter short and concise. It makes no sense to write a multi-page document – employers do not have time for this type of document. The cover letter should fit on 1 A4 page.

  1. Please check your contact details.
  2. Before sending your cover letter, please make sure that you have provided correct personal and contact information. Also, be sure to avoid private email addresses. In business matters, you should use an e-mail containing only your full name.

Also, be sure to double-check the document for other typos or spelling errors. This type of mishap can discourage your employer from finding that you are not doing your job.

The appearance of your cover letter is also very important. Make it clear, legible and aesthetic. You can easily prepare such a document in the cover letter wizard (see examples below) .

Frequently asked questions about a cover letter

Why are we writing a cover letter?

A cover letter will help you convince the recruiter that you are suitable for the position. Even the best CV template will not describe the candidate’s profile as much as 10-15 sentences. It does not matter whether you are writing a cover letter to the office or a manager’s cover letter. Even if it is not required by a job offer, it is always a good idea to include such a document in your application.

How to write the ending of the cover letter?

Each general template of a cover letter contains a paragraph in which the candidate expresses hope to be interviewed for the company (e.g. I hope to meet you during the interview and the opportunity to talk about more about my qualifications ). Be sure to end your cover letter with Sincerely or With Regards .

    Like send a cover letter?

When sending an email with your CV, also include a cover letter. In the text of the message, inform that the document is attached . Adding a few words about yourself to the application sent in response to a job offer will look best in the form of a cover letter. Never write about your qualifications in the e-mail to the recruiter itself.

What arguments should be mentioned in the cover letter?

Include information that is not on your resume in your cover letter. You can write about why you are suitable for the position and list arguments that prove it. For example, a salesman’s cover letter should mention how you work with people, what you’ve improved on your store’s performance, or how you communicate with your customers.
