Internships offered by employment offices in their time were one of the best ideas for finding employment. They allowed employers to “test” the employee, and the employee – to gain professional experience and skills. Poviat labor offices were involved in co-financing internship projects. Initially, there were some pathologies in the system where some employers thought interns were a great way to get free labor, but things were quickly sorted out.

It is worth checking: Current job offers

An entrepreneur who recruited interns, but then did not hire anyone, was then not taken into account for the organization of subsequent internships. In this way, some people who would never find a job gained knowledge, skills and experience so large that after the end of their internship they got a satisfactory job offer. On the other hand, interns in state and local government administration (after the end of the internship, they could not be employed, for example, in offices, because there is a competition procedure for the selection of employees) gained points important in the overall evaluation of the candidates and often organized competitions won.

Why a scholarship, how can I get a salary?

– An internship is an excellent offer for people looking for employment in a situation where they are looking for a job that does not exist. This is the case, for example, in offices that usually require applicants to have specific administrative experience. For example, students of humanities studies can gain such experience thanks to internships – says Tomasz Zawiszewski, director of the County Employment Office in Bydgoszcz. – Currently, however, the situation on the labor market is different than a few years ago. In many places, unemployment is extremely low, actually employers are looking for employees, not the other way around. When this happens, the internship offer is no longer attractive. What sense would it make for an unemployed person to take up a job for a scholarship for an internship of up to PLN 1017 and PLN 0.40, when the minimum wage is much higher? And usually the wages offered are higher than this wage.

Employers constantly open to trainees

The interest in internships on the part of employers has not changed, it is still very large. However, it does not meet any interest on the other hand, and often even in places where there are no attractive job offers, and where unemployment is several percent. Employers are tempted by high wages after completing an internship, which is to equip interns with a set of skills needed for a given position. For companies, it is one of the methods of recruitment that encounters more and more barriers.

– When internships were introduced as one of the elements of supporting the labor market, they were intended to help young people, often graduates entering the labor market without much experience, notes Tomasz Zawiszewski. – Then the internships evolved and there is no problem with referring a person, for example, over 50 to him. However, definitely more people are interested in other forms of support. Thus, offices shift some funds from internships to supporting the adaptation of the workplace to the employee’s needs, as well as subsidies for setting up one’s own business. These two instruments are definitely more popular and this is what most people ask about. This does not mean that we do not organize internships at all, but we organize them to a much lesser extent than before.

Of course, some internship offers are still worth taking advantage of. Especially where it guarantees work in an interesting team of people, on attractive projects that can provide specific knowledge and skills. It is also worth knowing in advance the conditions for completing the internship. It is important whether the company employing interns has many of them (and cannot devote much time to any of them) or whether they will be in a small group in which the entrepreneur will invest time and knowledge to offer further cooperation on market terms after the internship.
