According to the company from Cupertino, the new tablet for professionals surpasses most laptops available on the market

Let’s be honest: there were very few doubts about what the iPad Pro 2018 is. Never before has an Apple professional tablet been subject to voluntary (as in leakers) and involuntary (from Apple itself via iOS updates) revelations about its design and specifications.

And expectations were actually didn’t disappoint. At an event this morning in New York (which forced OnePlus to anticipate the 6T presentation), John Ternus, head of hardware engineering at Apple, removed the veil from the long-awaited two 2018 iPad Pro models, both 11 and 12.9 screens. inch (slightly smaller than the new 13.3-inch Macbook Air presented a few dozen minutes earlier), with the declared intention to remove the market share from the hybrid laptops present on it. According to Ternus, the new iPads “are more efficient than 90 percent of notebooks on the market. And when you see them edit a 127-level (and therefore very heavy) Photoshop Photoshop file without a single hit, you can bet on it.

Ipad Pro 2018 features

Let’s start with the differences between the two 2018 iPad Pro models: size. Except for the nearly 2-inch diagonal that separates them, the two iPads are virtually identical: same SoC and GPU, same memory sizes, same cameras, and same functions. In short, two devices with the same technical specifications, if not for the screen size.

When describing the features of the 2018 iPad Pro, we start with the size. Despite the larger displays, both this year’s models retain the same size as last year’s, which had much smaller screens. This “miracle” was made possible by the narrowing of the frames: although the edges are always present, their size is much smaller than in the past. In short, following in the footsteps of the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xr, Apple is trying to create a tablet with a screen that takes up more and more areas of the front surface.

To do this, the iPad Pro 2018 forgoes the Home button (and Touch ID), replacing it with iOS 12 gestures and Face ID face unlock, the same biometric system Apple introduced with iOS 11 that can be used for Animoji. Memoji and Apple Pay. Thus, Liquid Retina Displays (LCD panels already seen on the iPhone Xr) can occupy more than 80 percent of the tablet’s face without increasing the overall size of the device.

At the heart of the aluminum body (only 6 millimeters thick) is the A12X Bionic SoC, consisting of an eight-core processor and a dedicated GPU with seven cores and defined as 35 percent faster than the previous year’s processors (and more efficient than most laptops on the market, according to Apple). The most interesting aspect of the equipment is the dedicated graphics accelerator, which significantly extends the possibilities of using the iPad. As mentioned, the event also featured Photoshop for iOS which should allow artists and creators to edit photos or create digital images without the need for a computer.

The Lightining connector is gone, making way for the “normal” USB Type-C connector that will allow owners to use the iPad Pro as a battery and charge other mobile devices. This is a sign that the battery is very capacious and should provide extended battery life (although, as usual, Apple did not specify the actual capacity). The 2018 iPad Pro specification is rounded off with four different memory sizes: 64, 256, 512 gigabytes and 1 terabyte.

All models are available in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 4G versions.

Ipad Pro 2018 Peripherals

Apple also took the opportunity to introduce new peripherals dedicated to its tablets: the new Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard Folio. Pencil now has a magnetic system to keep it “glued” to the tablet, and a new wireless charging system, plus ad hoc functionality for dozens and dozens of applications. The Smart Keyboard, on the other hand, covers and protects the tablet across its entire surface and offers users the convenience of a full-size keyboard without syncing or recharging.

Apple Pencil costs 135 euros; The 11-inch Smart Keyboard Folio costs 199 euros, and the 12.9-inch version costs 219 euros.
