The teachers break the rules by keeping the school cards secret

Parents want their children to be able to bring tests home. Then they have a chance to help them learn and correct their mistakes.

From the new school year, schools are required to provide parents with tests and cards.

– Now there are no obstacles for schools to allow students to take home exams – says Justyna Sadlak from the press office of the Ministry of National Education.

Most of the schools we called yesterday, however, do not intend to change anything regarding the provision of tests for parents.

– Just like last year, the tests will be available for inspection at school – announces Izabela Hubert, deputy headmaster of Primary School No. 32. We also heard a similar answer in other schools. – We keep the tests and cards in folders in the teachers’ room – explains Renata Nowak, headmaster of Primary School No. 54. She adds that parents have the right to see them on the school’s open day or during the teacher’s duty. – This is how it was solved in most schools in Krakow – adds Renata Nowak.

Parents believe that such sharing of tests at school is a fiction. Open days at school are usually organized only once a year, while in order to attend teachers’ duty hours, you must take leave from work. Meanwhile, children sometimes have several tests a week.

– It is important for me to keep my son checked at home. The point is not to pick on the teacher for having misjudged it, but to see what mistakes the child is making and work on. This is especially important in primary school. So I do not understand the reluctance of teachers to show their parents tests – says Marek Malec, the father of a child from a private primary school in Krakow.

Parents also believe that teachers keep secret information that tests should be released from this year on.

– Nobody at the parent-teacher meeting informed us about such a possibility, and I attend parent-teacher meetings in two schools. But when I asked my daughter why she couldn’t bring tests home, I heard that they could be photocopied and given to younger children – says Ewa Rud, mother of two school-age daughters.

The principals also explain the fact that cards are kept in schools in a different way.

– We are afraid that if we gave them home to the children, these tests would not come back to us for school. And this is an important document – explains Renata Nowak. However, the ministry of education believes that parents should have real, not fictional, access to school tests.

– The student and his parents do not have to ask the teacher for the provision of checked and assessed work. From September this year, the teacher is obliged to provide tested and assessed written works – emphasizes Justyna Sadlak.

Adds that only very important school documents, such as grades or retake exams, should be made available for inspection on site.

The case was also interested in PiS MP Maks Kraczkowski, who submitted an interpellation on this matter to Joanna Kluzik-Rostkowska, Minister of National Education. He is afraid that schools will not comply with the amendment to the Act on the Education System regarding the provision of works, because its provisions are not very precise. In his opinion, the tests should be regularly and regularly provided to parents, and not only during the open day of the school.

– School assessment must be public, and the best way to do this is to leave the student’s work home. You can oblige a student to return to the next lesson – believes the MP. Without introducing such a rule, she argues, parents cannot help their child learn and prepare to improve the test. According to Maks Kraczkowski, teachers who will not comply with the amended act on the education system should be sanctioned for breaking the law.
