Some time ago, on some occasion, I heard the opinion that the lack of doubts in faith is a virtue. Especially if it is the Catholic faith, I am not entirely convinced by this statement. It does not convince me because in faith, especially in Christianity, doubts are an indispensable element of it. Otherwise we are dealing not with faith but with ideology. With a system of values, maybe right ones, but only with some system. A well-functioning program but empty. By respecting the values, one can be a moral person, but is it a believer?

What is the Christian faith?

Exactly, let’s start with the basics. Christianity is a personal and deep, ever-growing relationship with God who is alive. A God who speaks to me and wants good for me. A God who does not expect sacrifice from me, but mercy, because He gave Himself for me, so that I would not die, but would have eternal life. What is not the Christian faith? It is definitely not a fight against sin. They are definitely not works, it is not belonging to the Church. Finally, it is not the fulfillment of the commandments, beginning with the Ten Commandments and ending with the Church’s. Understand me well, these things, such as fighting your addiction, are important, but not the most important! All this is born in our heart with time and results from gratitude for the received grace of salvation totally free. Faith begins when the desire to fill the void with Eternal Love arises in my heart. Christianity when I invite Jesus into my heart and make Him my savior. Then there is only faithful following His word that He addresses me. And here the stairs begin. For while everything seems clear and clear at first, we may encounter difficulties with the time of God’s guidance. And it gets bigger. Anyway, the rule applies, the farther into the forest, the darker one. From time to time, you come across a forester’s lodge, where you can rest, eat, drink, sleep and ask for directions. Someday, however, you have to leave this forester’s lodge and continue your journey. Yes, you can stay, but would you really be satisfied with living in the middle of the forest, although it is relatively comfortable? Wouldn’t you like to see what’s next? Wouldn’t you like to meet people who, like you, are going the same way? Even out of sheer curiosity, you will probably say yes, you want to move on. So we’re on our way! Because Christianity and faith are the way to go!

Where do the doubts come from?

We went on a journey called “living in friendship with God”. So we entered the forest, we have already walked a bit. In the beginning there was excitement, adrenaline, butterflies in my stomach, everything was oh and ah. After that, the emotions had subsided a bit, but our enthusiasm seemed to be still intact. And so we go, we got a bit tired, but we found a forester’s lodge. We were given food, drink, and there was nowhere to sleep. It could have been a retreat, an evangelistic concert, a conference, a meeting with someone, or even a regular mass or service. We have gained strength and move on. After some time, emotions completely subsided, heavy rain began to fall and a strong wind began to blow. Worse yet, I ran out of food and water. We are still able to reach what we had a few kilometers. Then trouble starts. The legs are getting heavier and heavier. We are running out of strength, and we do not see any safe haven. In addition, our roadmates have gone somewhere. Some have lost their way, took shortcuts, others have turned back. Some are in the forester’s lodge all the time. Still others were offended, beat us up and left us. We are alone. It’s getting dark, the battery has died in the flashlight. The map is wet. The choice was left to stop, but then we’ll begin to sink into hopelessness and perish, or we’ll try to move on. But how, where, which way? The question comes after the question. What to do!? We seem to scream, but no one wants to listen to us, because there is no one around us. We begin to doubt the sense of this whole journey.

I think you got what I mean. Doubts and doubts arise from uncontrolled life events. This rain, wind, darkness, people departing and hurting us. These are life circumstances beyond our control. It can be a job loss, illness, financial crisis, death or departure of a loved one and many other unpleasant things that happen to all of us in our lives. So far, everything seemed clear to us. The Word of God (map and torch) was clear to us and showed us the direction. Now we do not understand what we are reading, we take the Bible in our hands, but we do not understand it. We pray, we howl, but God seems to be silent. We hear no answer, no clue. We begin to doubt. We ask ourselves about the sense and legitimacy of all this. We ask a question that is rhetorical this time, why?

Types of doubts

I think we can distinguish two kinds of doubts. The first are the doubts related to the Church, its teaching, the legitimacy of the rules, but also the first point includes those that concern people in general. Let us call them “the doubts of the flesh.” They may concern the Church’s teaching on contraception, IVF, Marian worship, etc. These doubts also concern the legitimacy of usurping the clergy to a special social position, the way of life by priests, pastors, but also by my brothers and sisters. They are related to the question of whether I really have to abide by all of this, do I really have to put up with these people and so on?

The second type of doubt is “doubts of the spirit” which undermine God’s goodness, mercy and His promises. They challenge the authenticity and the divine inspiration of the words of Scripture. They question the anointing of preachers and teachers of faith. Finally, they deny the legitimacy of our conduct, vocation, mission and path.

They are related to the question of whether you really God want good for me? Do you really want me to be happy? Do you even exist and do you care about my fate? Will I find something for myself in this word? Is this preacher right? Etc.

I think that if God can deal with our “doubts of the flesh” at the end of time, the “doubts of the spirit” can be poverty, mainly for us!

God of doubt

While reading the Bible every now and then, we may come across people who have had to deal with doubts and unbelief. Abraham, Noah, Joseph of Egypt, Moses, Gideon, Jonah, Elijah, David or new testamentary heroes like Mary, Joseph, John the Baptist, Thomas, Peter or the disciples going to Emmaus. Moreover, Jesus also had doubts! Each of these people experienced doubt and unbelief at some point in their lives. And since we can read about them, God did not despise them in some way. The fact that we can learn to live by the example of these God’s people, as well as by the example of God Himself, shows that doubt, doubt, unbelief are part of living with God! Because to live with God is to have a relationship with Him. Live report.

Let’s look at our relationships with other people. It is enough for someone to make a gesture or say some “not suitable” words. And we already have our theories that this someone does not like us, does not love us, etc. Women especially like us, sometimes it is enough to make a stupid joke and you can destroy the relationship (I know something about that). I think that each of us today is too sensitive to the words and gestures of other people towards each other. Someone did not reply to a text message, and our script immediately assumes that this person ignored us. Or was her phone just dead? Or is it different? Maybe the behavior of this person, his words, though perhaps not very pleasant and comfortable for us, are to tell us something? and these doubts are sometimes not entirely unfounded and they communicate something to us?

And that’s how it is with God, as long as I have a relationship with Him, I take Him seriously and engage in dialogue with Him. At first, our relationship seems perfect. We seem to understand each other without words. I think I can do so much that the Lord blesses me abundantly. Did you get it? I think ! Often in a relationship with God, when we follow Him a little, especially in His blessing, we put ourselves at the head of the pyramid. We put ourselves in the place of God and we expect God to only applaud and bless us. And God forbid he would require something! And here’s the meatball! Because after a while everything starts to fall apart. People are bad, priests are bad, Marian worship is useless, contraception from the cosmos, in vitro darkness, Church blah, pastor blah, music blah. Everything blah. And you start asking like students going to Emmaus, “and we thought” … that it would be so beautiful. You thought wrong!

I mentioned at the beginning that doubts stem from uncontrolled events in our lives. This is true, but there is another source of doubt as well. These are my ideas about God and His plan, or rather my plan, for my life. Often, it is my ideas and expectations of God that are the source of these uncontrolled events in my life. And to be well understood. I am not saying that every unpleasant thing that happens to us in life is a punishment for our selfishness and pride. Some things just are, e.g. the death of a loved one. However, I am convinced that every unpleasant situation is God’s message to us. In such situations, there are many emotions and feelings that hurt me. And they hurt because something went wrong. Something is out of place. I have already written that we are very sensitive about each other. Almost every pain is treated almost as a tragedy or drama, although sometimes they are actually tragedies and dramas. This is because sometimes we have bent in proportions. So you have to think about something, put it in the correct order. To change something, to convert from Greek metanoia is to change your mind.

God does not take offense at us when we doubt. He allows all these things to happen to us so that, when we experience doubts, we may see and hear the message that the Good Father addresses to us, his children. And he is very happy when we start the dialogue again. He wants to talk to us. After all, disagreements are best explained through conversation.

My doubts

The time of doubt is not only a time of trial, but also of increased activity of the devil. With all his strength he wants to plunge us into hopelessness and destroy us. Do you still remember the forest and our journey? We were left alone, we do not have the strength, lights, maps, it blows and it rains. We have a choice, to stay, sit down, give up, or try to move on. If you stay and stop remembering that there is someone greater than this situation and that that someone is good. You could be in trouble. The first thing the bad guy will try to do is take away your sense of security. He will want to take away the awareness that God is your father, a good father. He will suggest that he has left you and that you are alone. You’ve been used. The second thing he will try to convince you that your efforts and prayers are for nothing. Your sacrifices for nothing, etc. Anyway, he will want to convince you that you have to offer something to God. He will want to make you suffer for something, for something. Which is total nonsense, because God doesn’t need sacrifice but mercy. Remember, God invites you and doesn’t force you to do anything. He is free and respects our freedom. Sometimes even to the point of absurdity. God wants nothing more for man than freedom. Because there is salvation and happiness in freedom. The evil one will want to convince you that you are not a child of God but His servant, slave, and that you must do something.

If we agree to these words, we will feel resentment and disappointment. God will become someone distant, some boss, a master but not a dad. We will stop trusting Him. We will hold a grudge against him. Sometimes at such moments we begin to curse God. We start to resort to entertainment, TV, computer, games, pornography, gambling, music. And then the evil one unleashes his attack.

Today it is fashionable to exorcise everything and everyone. We see a spiritual threat in movies, fairy tales, games and music. And this is, in a way, a correct claim. However, there is a deeper basis for devilish interference in our lives or even bodily attacks. This is the cause of doubt and unbelief in the goodness and love of God. I have some tangible experiences in this field with the forces of evil. At one point in my life, I doubted God’s goodness and love. I took the giver’s attitude. I believed bad instead of God. Instead of facing my doubts, talking honestly with God, I escaped into music, not necessarily the “black” one, meeting people, etc. Prayer became mechanical.

All the bad things were gone when I turned to God again. I recognized my unbelief and confessed that sin to God. I spoke with Him honestly and trusted Him as a good Father.

While experiencing doubts, we are confronted with our own powerlessness and powerlessness. All our skills and talents seem trivial, weak and serving no one. This is when we most often say: I am not suitable, I cannot, I cannot, etc. These promptings also come from the evil one. Nothing, it only remains to sit on a stone, go into hopelessness, despair and depression. You’ll survive somehow… just somehow. Do you want anyway? Not! Great! Because there is also a second option! Get up and try to move on!

Some time ago, on some occasion, I heard the opinion that the lack of doubts in faith is a virtue. Especially if it is the Catholic faith, I am not entirely convinced by this statement.

The most important decision is that you don’t want to stop, let go, but want to move on! It is the re-election of God as my savior and guide, even if it is lost in the forest. In other words, don’t change anything! Do not make rash decisions, especially in life, e.g. regarding your calling and mission. Remain in trust and trust in the Good God. You will ask what to do to maintain this attitude of trust and trust? First, pray! As before, pray regularly. Don’t be afraid to stand before God, even if you hold a grudge against Him. You can even shout them out to him. Shout out everything, hurt, doubt, your unbelief. The worst thing you can do is run away from God. However you are in pain, stand in front of Him! Secondly, accept your everyday life because God’s will is in it. God is a good God. A good shepherd and he is with you always! Do not forget about it! Often, during crises, we want to escape somewhere in the name of the principle: it’s good where we are not. There is no God here, but there is. At a concert, in music, film, people, in another community, denomination, ministry, calling, etc. Of course it’s a lie! In your everyday life, as before, God gives you great good. However, you have to see it. And for this you need an examination of conscience. Not an examination of conscience to show me my sins, but the good that God bestows on me. I need to see that a miracle is happening every day in the form of my awakening. I have something to eat, where to live, etc. See good in your life. Find and see your talents. Also look back and see how God has guided you so far. It’s very important to see this. When you find and name it all, then look for your mistakes and start correcting your thinking and behavior. Reach for God’s Word, even if it is not understandable to you at this point. At this point, the very fact of understanding is secondary, the most important thing is your desire to hear what God wants to tell you. And calmly, after some time everything will slowly become clearer and more understandable. However, do not try to force this understanding. Don’t blame yourself if prayer, examination of conscience, or reading of the Bible do not bring immediate results. It is about perseverance and a desire for God in my life. Sometimes, when we read God’s Word, we may get the feeling that “I’ve heard it before, and it doesn’t work, etc.” It is also a seed of doubt sown by the devil. Jesus said bluntly: Whoever turns after the plow is not worthy to be my servant, and that is the key. Even if a given word has not worked, trust it again and again and again. Until the effect. Apparently, it is not yet time for this word to be fulfilled in your life. This struggle is very hard. Sometimes it seems to me that it is nonsense, that it does not work, but I try to move on, hoping that the time will come. After all, every thing under heaven has its time!

Also, do not give up the sacraments, even if their meaning seems not very clear. Here, too, you need patience. Above all, what matters is the desire to meet the Father in them. In time, you will surely meet him there.

Stop looking at yourself and your poverty. Seek God, not yourself. Do not look for what is convenient and pleasant for you. Don’t get emotional in either side. Faith is not an emotion but a concrete path of love between God and man. Do not focus on what is bad in your life, but look for the good. Look at the cross, where Jesus bore your sins, diseases and weaknesses for you. Seek His Voice, His Will. Take on everyday life. Don’t choke on yourself, there is someone greater than your sins, weaknesses and doubts. Look at him. Climb the hill like Abraham and see what God gives you! While in the valley you won’t see anything, you have to climb, make an effort to see. Living by faith is not only here and now, but a way and a gospel perspective that is always open. It is in front of you all the time, not behind you!

Also refer to the promises that God has made in your heart. They help you get through difficult times. Especially when the devil wants to convince you that you are good for nothing. You have no chance of luck or prospects. You will not fulfill your calling or mission, etc. In such situations, I often refer to my promises that the Lord will give me everything I need to live (Mt 6: 25-34) and to the one that defines my vocation (Is 61: 1-34). 3). It helps and is an effective deterrent of depressing thoughts!

I hope I didn’t bore you, and my text will help you through difficult moments. Head’s up! If you experience doubts in your adventure with God, I have Good News for you! Do not be sad! But rejoice that your relationship with Him is a true and living relationship! And remember, when in doubt, you have become an ideological follower, not a Christ follower!
