Freedom is a value that is especially appreciated by man. He often defines being happy with the word freedom. Being independent, free, being able to independently decide about your own life – these are also the main messages of fiery advertising slogans. Much is said about the importance of freedom during national holiday anniversaries, emphasizing the achievements of national heroes and their efforts to win the country’s independence. The constitution also provides us with a large catalog of freedoms. In addition to economic, cultural and political freedoms, personal freedoms are mentioned, such as personal inviolability, freedom of association, protection of personal life, good name, freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of belief and, above all, the right to life.

There are a lot of these rights. Everyone wants to use them. Unfortunately, some people forget about the consequences of their actions in the name of the principle “I deserve it”. Man focuses too much on his own rights, freedoms, forgetting about responsibility. Today, when browsing internet portals or flipping through the pages of opinion-forming journals and magazines, it can be observed that this freedom of belief and freedom of expression often comes down to throwing at another human being as many invectives as possible. Everyone strives to show their “one and the right” reason with the best rhetorical means. Most of these are arguments based on unstable emotionality. It can be observed that the degree of freedom is defined by the degree of enslavement of another human being. Selfishness, of course, is at the root of such behavior. St. John Paul II proclaimed that freedom is given to man and asked to show the truth about good. And addressing young people, he stated: “To be truly free – that is, to use your freedom for what is true good. […] this means: to be a man of right conscience, to be responsible, to be a human being for others ”.

The October demonstrations in defense of “women’s freedom” and the right to self-determination may prove how distorted the understanding of freedom has become. Striving for self-realization and comfort at the expense of another person’s life, care and help for a weaker, less available person? One of the stars of show business – she had an abortion, explaining her decision by uncomfortable living conditions, which, as a result, interfered with her vision of the life to which she was attached. Meanwhile, she did not feel uncomfortable about participating in an internet talk show on an area of 20 m2. Often, imposing one’s own vision of freedom is formulated under the charge of opposition to the Catholic – national narrative, understood as “medieval” or “parochialism”. This narrative also disturbs the modernity and freedom manifested in the sometimes scandalous theater plays that destroy national symbols and religious freedoms of believers.

The already mentioned Saint Pole emphasized that man is called to freedom. And also that “There is no freedom without responsibility and without the love of the truth.”

When observing groups that represent an innovative view of freedom, it seems more appropriate to adopt a rather conservative attitude. I think that artist M. Grechut put it well in one of his works:

“Because freedom – it means to live among wise people

To see goodness in their eyes and happiness (…)

“Freedom is also the resistance of hearts

To avoid trying to go downhill

Because there are those who miracle in freedom

They can mix galore of their doings. ”

May we be able to show more empathy in relationships with other people and let us not forget that true freedom is not only the good of ourselves, but also of others.
