Touch ID when it returns to high-end iPhones

While all Android smartphones, even the low-end ones, have a sub-screen fingerprint sensor, high-end iPhones only have Face ID, which not everyone likes

Touch ID on iPhones 13? No thanks. At least for 2021 models. It now seems certain that despite persistent rumors that have been circulating in the industry for a while and after several years of absence, we will not see the fingerprint reader reappear on the next-generation top of the iPhones range in September.

The confirmation was made by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, through his weekly newsletter “Power On”, which permanently shattered the hopes of those who had hoped and were now confident of his return. In fact, news has been circulating in the tech sector for quite some time, thanks in part to a 2019 report by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to an Apple product expert, this year we should have seen a model equipped with both biometric sensors used by the Cupertino company, i.e. Touch ID and Face ID, the latter used for facial recognition.

Touch ID, what will it look like in the future?

In the newsletter, Gurman introduced an important new feature of the new sensor. What should be involved is the format: no longer the traditional button format, already seen and used on older versions, but a sensor that is invisible from the outside of the iPhone, as it is perfectly integrated under the display surface.

A complete revolution, because it would be part of a wave of changes that would also include Face ID. It is face recognition that the company focuses on, the integration of which is already visible on several smartphones produced by Samsung and a handful of Android devices currently available on the market. This is a redesign process that would bring Face ID under the screen as well and not in the top indent anymore.

Cupertino is said to have already reduced the space it takes up by reducing the size of the chip that analyzes images captured by Face ID by 50% and repositioning the audio amplifier to make more space. This will not be an immediate change, however, as some analysts at Barclays say it will not come until 2022 and only after the transition to the punch format that will eventually lead to a seamless screen.

Touch ID when it goes back to iPhones

According to Gurman, the return of Touch ID – especially at the top of the range – will be an obstacle course. Despite testing the integrated sensor on flagship phones, the technology could only be used on entry-level models, while Apple would have thought of a new Face ID for the more expensive ones.

The second case the journalist points to is related to the differentiation of technologies used in different iPhones. The Pro and Pro Max could go towards Face ID below the surface of the screen, while the others could go towards the version we got to know in the last few years.

In the meantime, following the announcements, by 2021 we can already expect a reduced note, larger batteries, a screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and up to 1 TB of storage in the Pro. Added to all this is the A15 Bionic system, which is faster than its predecessor, and new, larger sensors of dedicated cameras. It could also be the last year of the iPhone Mini, the most disappointing in terms of sales, and one that Apple has reportedly decided not to focus on after 2022.
