Gone are the days when large workplaces ran their own vocational schools. Rather, there were students who could not cope with education in normal institutions. What was more of an educational exile 20 years ago is welcome today.

Vocational schools and technology even seek the patronage of large companies, preparing practical classes to teach and train their students to the specific needs of the entrepreneur. It is also a big plus for the students themselves. Thanks to such cooperation, the likelihood of finding a job after graduation is dramatically increased.

It is most often thanks to the links between schools and companies that it is possible to organize practical classes for students in companies, apprenticeships, and finally acquire sponsors for the technical equipment of the school.
Training for employment benefits both parties

Active cooperation, which later pays off in the form of employment of graduates, depends mainly on the activity of school principals. It is they who have to come up with the initiative to establish contacts with entrepreneurs. They have neither time nor employees to deal with establishing cooperation.

System solutions are needed to encourage employers to cooperate with schools. For the time being, for most of them, such contacts are saved on the cost side rather than the profit side. Tax breaks or financial bonuses for those educating students could change the situation.

Adjustment in the labor market

– It is necessary to promote education in fields consistent with the needs of the labor market, with particular emphasis on the promotion of vocational education. Many studies, including World Bank, shows that today’s expectations of employers do not focus only on acquiring graduates with hard, strictly professional qualifications. The key to the needs of the labor market is also the development of soft skills and appropriate attitudes, such as honesty, responsibility or discipline. The place where such competences should be shaped is primarily school and university, but also institutions in which the generation of the youngest Poles is educated, e.g. kindergartens and even nurseries – says Małgorzata Rusewicz from PKPP Lewiatan.

The employer his and the university his own

While the situation in vocational education is not that bad, because the sense of the existence of these schools is based on education that will respond to the needs of local labor markets, the situation with graduates of secondary schools or studies is more complicated.

Universities, as autonomous units, create their own curricula. Especially university colleges further educate in fields that determine their status in the world of science, but often have nothing to do with the needs of the labor market. Political scientist, sociologist, philosopher, but also a librarian and teacher – these are professions that consistently rank high among the unemployed.

A technical university willing to cooperate

The situation is different in technical universities and private universities. For them, to be or not to be the market is to create apprenticeship opportunities in such a way that the student and graduate have sufficiently well-educated practical skills to easily find employment in an interesting industry or profession. These universities themselves are looking for opportunities to cooperate with enterprises, and the state border is not a barrier for them.

This, in turn, may soon turn out to be a big problem for Polish companies willing to develop. Well educated, with considerable practical skills, graduates will choose foreign employers, preventing Polish companies from developing dynamically. This is the case with graduates of telecommunications, engineering or IT.
