The motherboard, processor, RAM, graphics card, power supply and hard drive are the main components of a computer. Here’s what they do

Every day we use our computers to do many things. From work to play. Using a computer is now quite easy. But understanding how a computer works and what components it contains is much more complex. There is much more to it than just a screen and a keyboard.

It is impossible to start a tour of what a computer looks like without starting from the motherboard. A motherboard is, as its name implies, a circuit board that connects the rest of your computer’s components to keep them communicating with each other. The motherboard uses software called the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) to manage all installed components. The BIOS software is on a small chip on the motherboard.

CPU

The processor, or central processing unit (CPU), is a bit like the legs and arms of a device. It is used for computer operation. The CPU coordinates the work of other units that process data, perform mathematical calculations and receive instructions from various programs installed on the machine. The processor is in the form of a square chip, one side of which has a series of metal “pins” to anchor it to the motherboard. The processor is located on the motherboard and usually has a heat sink on top. It is used to cool the processor and prevent dangerous overheating.

Power Supply

The AC adapter is an element that allows the correct amount of electricity to flow to the computer. There are different models of power supplies on the market and generally the more stable the control of the supplied voltage, the more expensive the component. If you are buying a power supply, you should always get one that is not too cheap, preferably with shielded cables and a few outputs.

RAM

RAM, which stands for Random Access Memory, is volatile memory that stores and retrieves the data needed to run your computer very quickly. The more efficient and larger the RAM, the better the performance of the computer. Size does matter to a degree though, the best RAM is made by reputable and reputable brands with low latency and heatsinks.

Hard drive

A hard disk, or hard disk, is a magnetic type component that stores files and enables both read and write operations. They are usually made of aluminum or glass and covered with a ferromagnetic material and two heads per disk. These are the physical places where each document is saved when we perform operations such as SAVE and SAVE AS. Their future is threatened by new solid state drives. Each computer can have one or more hard drives, internal or external.

Graphics card

The graphics card is one of the basic elements of our computer. Thanks to it, we can see even the smallest dot on the screen. Without a graphics card, the screen would remain black. There are integrated or external graphics cards. The former are integrated with the motherboard, the latter are components mounted inside the computer.

Peripherals

Other basic components are peripherals. We are talking about mice, monitors, printers and keyboards. The most commonly used peripherals are those designed to read DVDs and CDs.
