After limiting the length of videos in the states to fifteen seconds (India only for now), the app now sets a new limit: messages that are forwarded too many times can only be sent to one chat at a time.
This may seem like a minor change, but it really isn’t. WhatsApp is one of the most popular platforms for users to text and stay in touch with friends and family during this time of year when we’re all stuck at home. Among the many messages that you send, however, there are those that spread quickly online and are fake news. At a time when correct information makes all the difference in reducing the plague, WhatsApp has decided to limit messages to aid the work of doctors and governments. Here’s what it means for users in their daily lives.
WhatsApp, how the message forwarding limit works
Application developers have been working on the “forwarding” feature for a long time. Unfortunately, it is the tool of choice of hackers and scammers who want certain types of messages to go viral. Already last year, developers intervened by limiting the number of chats to which suspicious messages can be forwarded to five. The app also introduced a label to distinguish them: double arrow above the message.
The limit for forwarding questionable messages to five chats at a time has been lowered to one chat at a time. According to WhatsApp, this is a great way to stop the spread of fake news: the five-chat limit has already cut the number of messages forwarded by 25% globally. With this further cut, they hope to put an end to this rather distasteful practice. The new tool will remain even after the end of the state of emergency, as opposed to the US movie cap, which will be removed.
Message forwarding limit: what changes for users
Certainly, this is not a significant change for users, but we are definitely dealing with a limitation that will result in a different and more conscious use of the application. When we get a message announcing another video infecting the smartphone, or coupons to buy food or clothes, users will be less likely to pass them on to every chat.
WhatsApp is keen to point out, however, that not all messages transmitted contain fake news or contribute to misinformation, and in many cases it is useful information, funny videos, memes and meaningful reflections.
When the new tool will be active
No need to wait for the app update: the new tool has already been activated by WhatsApp engineers for both the desktop version and the Android and iOS apps.
