New problem with Windows 10 update. This time, Microsoft admits, many users may have printing problems: how to fix
New problems for PCs after the next cumulative update of Windows 10 and this time Microsoft fully admitted its mistakes. After the update in late September, many users complained that they were unable to print any type of file while the printer was working fine up to the day before.
The update that causes the printer to crash is KB4522016, released on September 23. The problem is with the print spooler, which is a Windows service that receives and manages all the files sent to the printer. The problem affects not only Windows 10, but also Windows Server, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1. In some cases, the spooler freezes, some files already sent to the printer do not print, and some applications may even hang and crash . Microsoft says it is already working on a fix for the problem, but there is no fix yet.
What to do if the printer does not work after the upgrade
Microsoft explains on the support page for this issue that at the moment you can only try to work around the bug. Trying to start a print job again may, in some cases, allow proper printing. If that does not work, you can try turning the printer off and on again. If your machine is using a v4 printer driver and a v3 driver is available, uninstalling the v4 driver and installing the v3 driver may solve the problem. The problem is that it is not easy for the average user to find out what type of driver their printer is using.
Uninstall KB4522016
Another, more drastic, way to fix a printer problem after installing KB4522016 is to uninstall the update. In fact, KB4522016 was released mainly to fix a security problem in Internet Explorer. If, like most Windows users, you are not using Internet Explorer as your browser to surf the web, you can also ignore the security issues and remove the late September update. Waiting for Microsoft to release the next update to put things alright.
Lots of problems after upgrading Windows?
Whichever method you choose to fix your printer problem after the last Windows update, the fact is that this update also brought the problem. Nowadays, we very often encounter one or more problems after updating the Microsoft operating system, and everyone is wondering why the Redmond software house is not able to prevent such episodes.
A possible answer came from a former Microsoft employee: according to Jerry Berg, Microsoft no longer does real testing on different computer configurations before releasing an update. On the contrary, all tests are now carried out by Windows Insider users, that is, those who agree to install non-final versions of the operating system in order to have access to the latest features. According to Berg, this does not give a realistic idea of what problems may arise after the update is released to the general public.
