Apps for hiking and trekking enthusiasts allow you to geolocate your whereabouts and share your experiences on social media

With the arrival of the summer season, hiking and trekking enthusiasts will have new opportunities to use their hobby in practice. Sure, finding routes, saving them, and organizing your backpack isn’t easy, but apps can come to your rescue.

Today’s travel apps offer many services. The primary one is, of course, GPS navigation, which allows novices and enthusiasts to avoid getting lost while hiking. Many applications on the Google Play Store and App Store allow you to share your experiences directly on social networks. In many mountain or coastal areas, phone coverage is not always efficient, not to mention battery consumption. All aspects that leave the user without the possibility of contacting emergency help. This is where trekking and hiking apps come in handy.

Oruxmaps

Oruxmaps is a navigation application, i.e. for maintaining the correct course during physical activity. Oruxmaps is one of the most popular hiking apps on the Android operating system. The reason for its success is functionality and ease of use. This makes the app useful for both experienced and novice hikers. The app has an archive of the maps stored inside, but you can easily upload new routes or download them directly from the web. It is possible to track the route and even geolocate a given point with a photo.

GPS KIT

GPS KIT is one of the best iOS apps for navigation. The success of the T application is due to the sheer number of maps in the database. There are so many maps in the database that there is practically no need to load new routes. The registration of tracks and waypoints (including photographic ones) is also interesting. One of the most important functions is the one that allows you to save parts of the map for offline use. This allows you to save a map fragment for offline use, so that the smartphone does not use too much power while traveling.

WIKILOC

This application is linked to one of the most popular websites for adventurers and trekking enthusiasts, where users share maps, information and tips for routes and trails. Thanks to Wikiloc, millions of roads and trails are available to explore at the touch of a button. It is available for both iOS and Android smartphones. The only downside is the cost. The official version is free but with no paid features it is much less powerful than the others mentioned above.

My Tracks

My Tracks is developed directly by Google. It offers several functions: recording the distance traveled, analysis of the most popular statistics such as distance, speed and time in motion. It is also possible to save routes and share them on social networks. You can also set waypoints and import routes from external memory. The problem is that you cannot edit maps offline, and you can only use Google maps, not alternate maps. In short, it is a classic app for beginners who don’t have much to start with.

Barometer Reborn

If the weather apps are not precise enough for your taste, you can use the barometer app. This will allow you to check weather changes in real time. The application in question is very reliable and recommended for a pool of experienced users.

Georesq

This is an important application developed in collaboration with Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS) in order to ensure maximum safety for people while hiking, in the mountains and beyond. How can the application save us? Simply put, services like this are able to pinpoint your location and track your movements, and most importantly, in case of difficulty, send an alarm with geodetic coordinates to the Soccorso Alpino station. The main limitation of this application is that the emergency service is phone signal dependent.
