A career counselor for young people – helps to show the way to those who are at the crossroads

Students who graduate from primary (or middle school) or secondary school, sometimes a few weeks before the start of summer holidays, do not know where to go next. A career counselor can help them dispel their doubts.

General secondary school, technical secondary school or trade school – which school to choose: that is the question. Some students of the last grades of primary schools, middle schools (closed because the last year of junior high school is the one who will finish their studies in June 2019) and secondary schools have known for years where they will continue their education. Others still have no idea in late spring whether to continue their education, and if so, in what school. The latter will be helped by a professional, namely a career counselor for young people.

A career counselor – why is it worth meeting with him

Some future graduates, faced with the dilemma of which school to submit their documents to, rely on intuition. It’s just that when a person is nervous, because he works under time pressure, this intuition can fail. So instead of choosing a school by force or at random, it is better to go to a meeting with a career counselor. He works mainly in a school or a psychological and pedagogical counseling center. The services he provides are free.

He will not x-ray the young man, but he can help him. Before she suggests anything, she will ask a number of questions. Not because he is nosy, but because, based on the answers given by the student, he will determine the profile of the activity. During the meeting with the career counselor, questions may be asked, such as those concerning the strengths and weaknesses of the candidate (which subjects the student does best and which he is lame in), extracurricular interests, character traits.

Purpose of the career counselor

The goal of a career counselor is to make an accurate diagnosis and prepare a teenager for the right choice of profession and path of further education, as well as developing an individual educational and professional career plan. Young people who are not able to determine by themselves what they would like to do in a few years or even a few months, thanks to the support of a counselor, are to find a suitable school (or other educational institution). Appropriate, i.e. the one after which the interested person, already as a graduate, will not be unemployed, but will find a job relatively quickly, in line with his education, skills and interests.

Cooperation with a minor and his parents

The role of a youth career counselor is not only to support a minor, but also to prepare parents to effectively support their child in making educational and professional decisions. When making his diagnosis, a career counselor takes into account the student’s previous achievements at school, his interests, predispositions, talents, his health situation, but also the current situation on the labor market, development trends in professions and individual industries / sectors of the labor market.

When high school is a good choice

As a rule, if a girl or a boy is finishing elementary school (or junior high school) and have no idea what profession they would like to pursue, but achieve at least average academic results, their choice is high school. The plus is that they gain more years to make decisions about further education. The downside is that general education does not provide a profession, so in order to strengthen its position on the labor market, a teenager must go to university, possibly choose a post-secondary school or at least complete vocational courses.

When is it worth starting a technical college

Science in technical secondary school is also aimed at people who have a minimum of good grades. It lasts a year longer than in a high school, but a technical school graduate has a profession in his hand, he has learned a profession, among others on internships, even organized directly at the employer’s, cooperating with the school. Young people after technical secondary school do not have to go to studies anymore, although there are more and more graduates of technical secondary schools who continue their education during their studies. What’s more: if a young person stated that he or she does not feel well in the profession, going to a technical college, he or she may choose another field of study.

When a trade school is a good solution

Whoever graduates from elementary school (or junior high school), but has to admit to himself that he was not an eagle in science, may participate in a trade school. The so-called industry sectors are replacing the basic vocational schools we have known for years. Theoretical training takes place at school, and vocational training – usually in a craft directly at the employer’s. After graduating from a trade school, a young person, willing to continue his education, can choose a secondary school and take the secondary school-leaving examination there.
