When Pope Francis spoke in the European Parliament two years ago, he addressed those deciding the fate of European politics with a message of encouragement: “to return to the firm conviction of the founding fathers of the European Union, who wanted a future based on the ability to work together to overcome divisions and promoting peace and unity among all the peoples of the continent. At the heart of this ambitious political project was trust in man, not so much as a citizen or economic entity, but in man as a person endowed with transcendent dignity. At the end of World War II lay Christian values. These were the guidelines of the “founding fathers” of the European Union: Konrad Adenauer, Robert Schuman, Alcide de Gasperi 60 years ago. Their fidelity to Christianity is confirmed by the beatification processes of the two founders of the Union. The daughter of Alcide de Gasperi in one of the interviews said that during the meetings of the government and the Council of Europe, her father always had the Holy Bible next to it. There is no doubt that the accompanying idea of the European Union was built on God. On the other hand, the Servant of God Robert Schuman, being a zealous Catholic, attended Mass almost every morning. They made decisions important for Europe after deep reflection and prayer.
Nowadays, the basics that shaped the original structures are being abandoned more and more.
Today it significantly deviates from these assumptions. There is no chapel in the European Parliament, instead an inter-religious place for meditation and prayer was created. In voting on Christian values, ie protection of life, MEPs support universal access to “reproductive health”, and consequently most of the time vote for abortion. Christian accents are erased from the documents. In the name of political correctness and “equality”, references to this religion are removed from public life. There is a lack of respect for basic human rights, the right to life (from conception to natural death), respect for human dignity and the family. Excessive consumerism, lack of responsibility for the common good and future orientation are visible. Over the past years, liberal and leftist circles have played an increasingly important role in shaping opinions and social life. This departure from the original assumptions has become the cause of the crisis which Europe is currently struggling with. The crisis of values that constituted Europe was also mentioned by Pope Francis in his speech on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome. The Holy Father said to the leaders of European countries: “The Founding Fathers remind us that Europe is not a set of rules to be followed, a manual of protocols and procedures to be followed. It is life, a way of understanding man based on his transcendent and inalienable dignity, and not only a set of rights to be defended or demands that must be asserted. At the root of the idea of Europe lies “the figure and responsibility of the human person with his leaven of evangelical fraternity … with his thirst for truth and justice exacerbated by thousands of years of experience”. Referring to the idea guided by the founders, the Pope remarked: “Their common denominator was the spirit of service, combined with political passion, and the awareness that at the source of European civilization is Christianity , without which the Western values of dignity, freedom and justice turn out to be largely incomprehensible. “It is therefore necessary to return to the goals that, on the eve of the unification of Europe, founders of the European Union, respecting the concepts of the Christian religion based on universal moral values in all areas of social life. This was also indicated by St. Pope John Paul II. In the exhortation “Ecclesia in Europa” he wrote: “(…) Christian inspiration can transform a political, cultural and economic community into a community in which all Europeans would feel at home and would create a family of nations that could be a fruitful inspiration for other regions of the world ”.
