Every year, high school graduates face a choice: to go on to college or not. If they choose the first option, the next dilemmas arise: which field of study to choose and which mode to choose.

When a high school graduate passes the matura exam, he usually thinks about studies. Those who graduated from general secondary school have little choice. If he does not go to university and his studies finish at the high school level, he will not get a profession. Therefore, those who graduated from the technical secondary school are in a better position. Both, however, after choosing a field of study, they may have dilemmas: which studies to go to – day, evening or extramural. We compare the study modes.

Full-time studies

Most popular among college applicants. Newly graduated students usually think of full-time studies. Those at state universities are free (private universities charge fees, with the exception of studies financed, for example, by EU programs). A graduate of a post-gymnasium school, going to full-time studies, as a rule, does not have a job yet. If he has it, it is usually for the weekend, so he can reconcile his studies with work. Most of the full-time students, however, do not work, at least not in their first year. They are financially dependent on their parents. Studying does not cost you, but for example keeping your daughter or son in a dormitory or a boarding house – yes. Full-time graduates are the most valued candidates by employers. They believe that since a young man entered full-time studies, he had to achieve sufficiently good results already in high school or technical school to make it happen. This, in turn, proves that the same young man is systematic and diligent, and employers care about such people. More and more often full-time students are already working at the end of their studies. It happens that in some fields of study, more than 70 percent of last-year students work part-time, but immediately after graduation, they will get permanent employment in the same company.

Part time studies

Once quite popular, nowadays they are not chosen so often by high school graduates (some universities do not conduct evening classes at all). They are sometimes evening only in name, but in practice, classes are held not only in the evenings, but throughout the day. Thanks to this, the student has 2-3 classes a week, and not every evening, from Monday to Friday. As a result, evening studies are very similar to full-time studies. What distinguishes them is the number of hours of classes – in evening studies there are fewer of them than in day studies. Another difference is in the fees: in the case of full-time studies (at state universities) there is no tuition fee, and you have to pay for evening studies. And sometimes it’s for part-time studies.

Part time studies

Years ago, it was mostly those who did not enter full-time studies that went to extramural studies. There have been years when over 90 percent of extramural study places were filled only after the results of enrollment for full-time studies were announced, and in the second round, because in supplementary recruitment. Times have changed and part-time studies are more and more often chosen not out of necessity, but out of will. Young people, right after graduating from high school, instead of taking the longest in their lives, a 4-month vacation, they rest shorter and then look for a job. If they find employment during the summer holidays and it turns out that they have a chance to stay longer, they most often use the opportunity. Since they have obtained permanent employment, and they still intend to go to university, they choose those in part-time mode. They earn money, so they are able to support themselves. Classes are usually held every other weekend, usually only on Saturdays and Sundays (universities less and less often also on Friday evenings). This makes it easy to combine work and study.

The downside is that you have to pay for part-time studies. The tuition fee, depending on the field of study and university, ranges from PLN 90 to almost PLN 1,000 per month. In the first case, such low tuition fees are set by small, new, not very well-known universities, which are trying to attract students with their low prices. The most expensive studies are at renowned universities with a rich history, known throughout the country and abroad. It is cheaper if you pay off a year in advance. At selected renowned universities, for the whole year, studies, e.g. law at the faculty of administration, cost almost PLN 8,000. This amount is only valid for a one-off payment for the entire academic year. However, when the student pays in two installments – for both semesters separately, the total will be over PLN 8,000. In a situation where a student pays tuition fees every month, he will pay a total of nearly PLN 9,000 for the year of study.
