Agility in business and management

Agile is agility. This idea arose in the IT world because the classic approach to project management in the variable and fast programming industry does not exist. You have to think differently and you have to act differently in teams. For years, Agile functioned only in IT. Recently, this philosophy has been transferred to various areas of business. For some time I myself have been running the Academy of Agile Leadership for top management for several companies. We combine the best Agile and leadership practices so that departments in the company can operate in a modern and smooth manner.

The idea of Agile is self-organization of the team. The aim is to create such mentality and processes that the team is dynamic and flexible, and at the same time focused on the goal, on the production of the product, on the business.

Agile Manifesto

Below you will find the Agile Manifesto, created in 2001 by 17 people, and described at https://agilemanifesto.org/iso/en/manifesto.html. It relates to the programming world, but most of these ideas can be translated into management in any department. Each department produces reports, projects, products and tasks. Every department needs to do better. To understand more, listen to the interview with Marcin. At the same time, think about how you can transfer each point to your industry and team.

The authors of the manifesto write:

We discover new programming methods thanks to programming practice and supporting others in it. As a result of our work, we started to value more:

  • People and interactions by processes and tools
  • Working software from detailed documentation
  • Cooperation with the client from contract negotiations
  • Responding to changes from the implementation of the assumed plan.

This means that the items on the right are valuable, but the items on the left are more valuable to us.

Agile in business

Below you will find 13 points that are the key assumptions of Agile, and at the same time constitute the foundation for agile management in business. This approach is of great importance to every company owner, manager, employee who cares about better communication, efficient cooperation and achieving results while maintaining normal relationships and peace.

First, I share Agile assumptions, and then give my business interpretation that can be applied in any area, in any business. When I work as a coach and consultant for companies I have to be flexible, I have to know different trends and methodologies.

I teach my students the same at the CVP School of Advisers. I teach an integral, multidimensional approach so that my graduates will be able to cope with different industries and positions in the future.

  1. Customer satisfaction is our top priority thanks to the early and continuous implementation of valuable software.
    • My business interpretation: The key is to focus on the effect and create value in what we do – so that the customer for whom we create products and services is satisfied.
  2. Be ready for changes in requirements, even at a late stage in its development. Agile processes use changes to keep the customer competitive.
    • My business interpretation: Flexibility in change is key. We need to get involved in what we do and create, but we cannot get attached to any stage, because at every moment a “pivot” or turn in a different direction will be needed. The goal is not to work for work, but for the competitiveness of a product or service.
  3. Deliver functioning software frequently, with intervals of several weeks or months. The more often the better.
    • My business interpretation: You must work in stages. Not on a scale of 1-3 years, but at shorter intervals to provide more fragments.
  4. The business and development teams must work closely together in their daily work throughout the project.
    • My business interpretation: Departments and teams must constantly build such conditions of cooperation not to create silos, not to create “us-them”, but still to cooperate.
  5. Create projects around motivated people. Provide them with the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done.
    • My business interpretation: I confirm.
  6. The most effective and efficient way to communicate information to and within the development team is face-to-face conversation.
    • My business interpretation: The same goes for any project team. Errors are systematically repeated, because if the team works, it works and we stop maintaining relationships, talking to each other.
  7. Running software is the primary measure of progress.
    • My business interpretation: Working products, good services and designs that make sense are a measure of business progress.
  8. Agile processes enable sustainable development.
    • My business interpretation: I confirm. Without agility, there is no modernity or efficiency.
  9. Sponsors, developers and users should be able to keep a steady pace of work.
    • My business interpretation: Every person involved in the project needs to go at an equal pace. To do this, you need to learn to flow information smoothly.
  10. A constant focus on technical excellence and good design enhances agility.
    • My business interpretation: I confirm.
  11. Simplicity – the art of minimizing the amount of work required – is key.
    • My business interpretation: I confirm.
  12. The best architectural solutions, requirements and designs come from self-organizing teams.
    • My business interpretation: The time is passing when the CEO and management know better. We need competent people who can act independently and create business value.
  13. At regular intervals, the team analyzes opportunities to improve its performance, then fine-tune and adapt its actions to the conclusions drawn.
    • My business interpretation: It has to be.
