Consideration for Holy Thursday B1 year
Receive me today, Son of God, as a participant in Your supper – we read in the Troparion, the Eastern prayer of the Holy Thursday liturgy.
I must confess that Holy Thursday touches me particularly strongly. Not only because on this day the Eucharist and the priesthood connected with it are born, but above all I am deeply moved by the One who loved his own to the end, loved them to the end.
Even at the hour of death, He does not think for a moment about himself, but prepares a feast, a feast after himself. In a kind of requiem for himself, he does not look for himself, but for me … And in a bowl with dirty water, and on the sheets he was girded about, he seems to reflect my face as a souvenir … God, who takes me with him to the end … to the Cross because only their loved ones are invited to the Cross, only friends …
And a supper with friends who will run away like wild rabbits in a moment … And a traitor on one side, and a coward on the other side … Mighty fishermen who will run away like frightened animals … And yet, Lord, you do not back down, although you could have chosen hundreds of better solutions…
Have you ever wondered who today Jesus would wash his feet … who he loved to the end, who would he go to the cross for …?
He got up from the table, took the sheet and was wrapped in it …
He approached an elderly priest with glasses … he smiled kindly at the newspaper editor and kissed his legs … and the others murmured …
He approached the director of the Catholic radio, sitting next to the editor of the weekly, looked at him lovingly and washed his tired legs … and the others murmured ..
He approached the leftist politician … this is too much … he looked at her lovingly and washed her feet … and others murmured, someone even wanted to get up and leave, but experienced the Lord’s gaze …
He approached the groom with piercings and tattoos, perhaps even some indicative other … he looked at him kindly and washed his feet, and one tear fell into the bowl of water … and the others murmured …
He approached the old village parish priest, who just nervously shook his head and smiled kindly at him, as if he wanted to thank him silently for everything … and washed his feet … and the others murmured that this priest was such a thing …
And a smelly homeless girl, the last scoundrel and a drunkard, and me …
If you’ve read up to this point, now look kindly at yourself in the queue of these strange people … Your face will also be reflected on the sheets next to many, if not all others …
It will not be so among you … Love one another … Love not only the good and the righteous who think like you – but all … Let there be no anger, jealousy, rivalry and venom among you – but wash your feet with each other! You are all servants, not masters and holders of the total and one truth. Man approaches the Truth, and does not possess it…
Thank God today for the whole Church, because Christ died for the whole Church … Thank and pray for those you do not like, you consider them to be enemies of the Church … And be glad that ultimately you are not the savior … More humility and trust Father – this is the way of Jesus. Will it also become your way?
