Immuni application: errors found on iPhones and reporting problems

After Android bugs, Immuni seems to have some problems on iPhones running iOS 14 as well, but not all of them are app-dependent and mostly not all reports are circumstantial.

Immuni, the Italian Covid-19 contact tracking app, seems to have some issues with certain smartphone models, in particular when submitting a user ID code claiming to be positive for coronavirus following a swab.

This was reported by Codacons, which is calling for intervention by the government and the Ministry of Health. Codacons says it has received several reports from its members and that these errors are preventing medical staff from finalizing the report. If that were true, it would render the Immuni app useless or, as Codacons notes, force users to use a different smartphone. The Consumer Protection Association, however, remains very general in its description of the faults and the smartphones they would have experienced.

Immuni bug: what the Codacons says

Codacons claims to have received reports of immuni malfunctioning “in relation to healthcare professionals responsible for authorizing the ID code of the person who intends to report their positive Covid test through this application”.

In very simple terms, when a person discovers that they are carrying the virus and starts reporting through Immuni, their unique identifier is not received by medical personnel.

IMMUNI error: which smartphones are affected

Codacons’ complaint is very general also with regard to smartphones where this error would occur: “On many non-latest generation smartphone models there is a collision between the software of the telephone devices and the application, with the consequence that the user, if he wants to use IMMUNI in the best way, is forced to buy a new phone. “

Immuni: problems already reported

In recent days, an issue with Immuni has been detected on iPhones after updating to iOS 14: the application detects that risky contact has occurred, but does not send a notification. However, this is not due to Immuni, but to new security measures introduced by iOS 14 that are supposed to block unwanted notifications. So this is a problem that only Apple can solve.

An issue found in mid-September in the Immuni app for Android has now been resolved: “exposure control” has been blocked due to a bug that has been fixed by Blending Spoons, the company that develops the contact tracking application.

Immuni numbers

In recent weeks, certainly due to the steep worsening of the infection curve, Immuni has been downloaded and used by many more Italians. The number of users has risen to 9.3 million, and 1,530 people have reported positive for the virus. The number of users rose to 9.3 million and 1,530 people tested positive for the virus. 36,200 reports were as many people who had contact with positive persons.

Additionally, as of October 18, Dpcm operators who receive positive reports from users are required to enter the smartphone identification number used by the infected user into the contact management system. It is this step that is purported to be the source of the problems reported by Codacons.

In early October, the government extended the Immuni contact tracking period by one year to December 31, 2021, and from October 17, the application also works abroad.
