After PlayStation VR, Sony is launching an update to its flagship console: 4K resolution support and unprecedented power

As Christmas approaches, Sony is launching the highlight of 2016: PlayStation 4 Pro, a next-gen console update that implements support for 4K resolution and HDR technology, improving picture quality and smooth video games.

The Japanese company focused on the power of the hardware: PlayStation 4 develops 4.2 teraflops of power thanks to a 2.1 GHz octa-core processor, 8 GB DDR5 RAM (with the addition of 1 GB DDR3 RAM dedicated exclusively to non-human applications to free up space for processing video games) and a graphics processor consisting of two video cards, the same ones already used in PlayStation 4, but with a frequency increased to 911 MHz. There’s also a 1TB hard drive for downloading games from the online store, as well as for storing photos, videos, and calls.

A step into the future

Sony is making it clear again and again that the PlayStation 4 Pro is just an update, not the new PlayStation 5: the console continues the direction it chose three years ago and is only trying to improve the visual quality of the games. This is explained by the support for 2160p (4K) and HDR (High Dynamic Range) resolutions, which allows games to further refine the quality of details. Let’s start with 4K resolution: at the moment no software house is able to create a game with such a high native resolution. For this reason, Sony developed an upscaling (checkerboard) algorithm that allows companies to take every single frame from the game and improve its quality. The operation is simpler than it sounds: the algorithm takes a 2 × 2 pixel square and enlarges it to 4 × 4. This has a positive effect on both the image quality and the smoothness of the game.

HDR is the new visual standard that will replace HD in the coming years. The only problem is that there are no televisions that support the new technology.

Reasons for PlayStation 4 Pro

For many, it may seem strange to launch the new Sony console a month after the launch of PlayStation VR, the first viewfinder created by the Japanese company and intended exclusively for the world of gamers. The choice of Sony, however, is very logical: the VR viewer needs a lot of power to perform at its best, a feature that only PlayStation 4 Pro can currently have. In fact, early testing of the new console shows that VR games benefit from improved graphics

Games available and compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro

A novelty that will please millions of players is the full compatibility of games created for the PlayStation 4 and the new console. In fact, PlayStation 4 Pro automatically adjusts to the type of game: if it recognizes that a given title is several years old, it optimizes the use of the hardware and “puts” one of the two graphics cards to sleep.

Video games created especially for PlayStation 4 Pro have not appeared on the market and the premiere of Horizon: Zero Down and For Honor will have to wait until next year. However, many software houses have released updates that improve game quality and increase resolution, with Uncharted 4 being the most successful experiment. The guys from Naughty Dog increased the native resolution to 1440p and implemented HDR support: the landscapes seem to come alive and the graphics quality is really exceptional. For adventure fans, an update has been prepared for The Rise of Tomb Raider, another title that took advantage of the new power of PlayStation 4 Pro.

Price and launch of PlayStation 4 Pro

The console goes on sale November 10 with a suggested retail price of 409.99 euros.
