From Dark Mode to Do Not Disturb, Here Are 5 Tricks To Get The Most Of Your Android Smartphone

If you’ve recently bought a smartphone, you are surely delighted and amazed at how responsive it is, how long the battery lasts, and how smooth it all runs. Enjoy it because it won’t take long.

All Android smartphones (actually iPhones too) lose their shine after a while, and it’s perfectly normal for this to happen. However, there are some basic tricks you can use to keep your device in top shape, settings that will be beneficial to performance and battery life in the long run. Here are five simple tricks that will help you make your battery age slower, keep the screen youthful and prolong the clean feeling of your new smartphone. Practicing these tricks is not only very simple, but also highly recommended.

Smartphone battery tricks

Since Android 9, Google has introduced a new battery management / optimization system. A system recently improved in Android 10 that optimally manages the battery consumption by “researching” our typical smartphone usage. With stock Android 10, to activate it simply go to Settings> Battery> Power Saver and select “Based on routine”. Another trick that is good for both the battery and the screen (but also your eyes) is to reduce the brightness of the display. Just close the curtain and turn off the auto-brightness, then manually set it to 50-60% of the maximum.

Use dark mode

Dark Mode is another step after the trick we just described: it reduces battery consumption, turns off screen pixels, and gives your eyes a rest in the evenings. It can be activated both at the app and operating system level (if you’re using Android 10), and if your display is OLED, it works wonders: the battery will last up to 30% longer.

Clean the home screen from useless icons

The big advantage of an Android smartphone over an iPhone when it comes to usability is that you can keep your home screen clean and free of useless icons, so you can quickly find the apps you need without having to search everyone else. Each installed application puts its icon on the screen by default, but we can remove it manually or set the smartphone so that it does not happen. Just touch and hold any part of your home screen and select “Home Settings” from the menu that appears. Here we find the “Add icons to the home screen” switch. Let’s deactivate it.

Use Do Not Disturb

This trick is about our well-being: let’s learn to use the Do Not Disturb feature, especially if we usually sleep with our phone on the bedside table. You can find it in Settings> Audio> Do Not Disturb, and you can program it to your liking. We can turn off all sound notifications, but we can also set exceptions if we need to.

Protect yourself against theft or loss of your device

The last trick that everyone should do is related to the “Find my device” feature, which is used to track the location of your smartphone in case it is lost or stolen. By going to Settings & Security & Find my device, we can turn it on and be a bit safer if our smartphone is lost.
