7 myths about multiracial dogs

Pedigree dogs may indeed suffer from certain health problems – whether inherited or due to the specificity of a given breed, in which enhanced anatomical features mean a higher probability of developing a specific condition (e.g. heart disease in a Doberman or hip and elbow dysplasia in a Bernese Mountain Dog) . However, diseases of purebred dogs do not in any way prove the extraordinary health of mongrels! Both dogs sometimes struggle with health problems. The belief in the above-average immunity of the hybrids works to their detriment – it can make the owner ignore the first symptoms of the dog’s disease or wait for his pet to “somehow get over it”. After all, he’s an indestructible mutt with superpowers, isn’t he?

Myth # 5 I WOULD LIKE TO TRAIN A DOG, BUT I HAVE A KUNDEL

The division into dogs worth training and mongrel dogs is definitely unacceptable! The mongrels can be perfectly trained, and acquiring new skills is as easy for them as for purebred dogs. It is obvious that each of them has different characteristics and will acquire new knowledge faster or slower, but the myth that you can’t teach a mongrel anything!

Of course, there are breeds such as the Border Collie and Australian Shepherd that learn faster, and even need new tasks and challenges to be able to use their energy. However, predispositions are not everything. In training a dog, its character and the attitude of the owner are very important. Only the compilation of several factors decides whether the training will be effective.

So we have good news: Much depends on you! If you are the owner of a hybrid with large amounts of energy and you dream about using it during training (teaching your dog commands, tricks and other skills important in dog’s life), nothing prevents you from trying your hand at training! You may find that you’ve come across an exceptionally knowledgeable student – just as it sometimes turns out that the owner of a purebred sheepdog has difficulty teaching him to obey or simply shake hands.

Myth # 6 WHAT A HAPPY MUNCH WITHOUT MANIER!

To the series “it’s just like that, because I know a dog that does that” we can include the myth that mongrels are very noisy by nature. People who keep this opinion alive do not limit themselves to just criticizing the dogs’ loud behavior – they distinguish purebred barking and those that make us immediately recognize a pooch without a pedigree. So how does a mongrel bark? First: loud, second: shrill, third: indolent! Of course, purebred dogs are opposed to such dogs, which let us know about their existence much less frequently. They’ll bark once, twice or twice, and that’s it. Perhaps it is a matter of nobility inherited in genes that excludes noisiness?

Does this mean that the owner of a hybrid, who is silent by nature and does not bark unnecessarily, should take care of tracking down some traces of raciality in his genes? What about purebred dogs that bark up nice? Does excessive barking undermine their pedigree? Of course, the answer to each of these questions is no.

Barking is not indicative of raciality or lack thereof. Dogs bark for a variety of reasons – fear, excitement, attention, or forcing their owner to do something.

If your dog is barking frequently and loudly, disturbing you and your neighbors, it is better to diagnose the problem that is at the root of the behavior than to think about the gene pool supposedly responsible for this state of affairs.

Myth # 7 pattern-faithfulness

You don’t know which dog to choose? Adopt a mongrel. After all, this is the most faithful dog in the world! The mongrel will always be with you and will never leave you, because only with him you will create a true bond and a deep relationship. Is there a way to test the truth of this theory? Unfortunately not. It is difficult to measure a dog’s faithfulness in any way!

The myth of fidelity probably arose in the environment of dog adoptions and was intended to create the belief that non-purebred dogs are as attractive as their pedigree cousins. This made it much easier for them to find a new home. There is a belief that a dog that has survived a lot is poor and wronged, so in return for being accepted and taken care of, it will automatically be faithful to its owner for the rest of its life. We, noble owners, save mongrels from bad fate, so they, incredibly grateful, will surely pay us back this debt in the form of attachment, even if we do not undertake any work on training or deepening the relationship with the dog. Unfortunately, nothing could be more wrong!

FIND OUT THE 6 REASONS FOR YOUR DOG ESCAPE AND FIND OUT HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM

When adopting a dog from a shelter, you should get to know its problems and find out where they arise and how you can work on them. The dog’s faithfulness will not come by itself! In fact, whether our pet will be faithful and devoted to us depends entirely on us, not on whether it is a mongrel or a purebred dog.

It is the owner who has to build a strong bond with the pet. How? Through proper care, proper grooming, walking together, training, playing, spending free time and providing the dog with a sense of security. If all the pet’s needs are met – both the basic (walking, nutrition, care) and more complex (training, learning commands, playing), and the dog will feel safe with us, we can be sure that the pet will not be looking for adventures out of the house and in his head, he will not escape him, but he will remain faithful and devoted to his owner. Being a mongrel does not matter and it is worth remembering!

SUMMARY

Myths apply not only to mongrels, but also to dogs of specific breeds. Some of them, however, may be harmful and affect the perception of a given quadruped badly. Therefore, it is worth fighting them effectively and patiently overthrowing them, making others aware that each dog is simply unique. The dilemma: mongrel or racial dog is quite easy to solve when we notice how little or no pedigree means in the face of a simple relationship with a pooch with whom we share our everyday life. Because regardless of whether your pet is a mongrel or a representative of a specific breed, he loves you just as much. And that’s what matters most.
