Higher education is not a guarantee of employment
The latest statistics from the Central Statistical Office show that the fact of having higher education does not translate into employment. In January 2015, the number of unemployed university graduates was 90.8 thousand, which translates to about 4 percent. the total number of unemployed. However, in the first quarter of 2014, the number of unemployed people with higher education amounted to 254 thousand, and in the case of people with completed secondary education, there were 230.2 thousand. people without employment. It follows that unemployment among university graduates is similar to the unemployment rate among people with general secondary education.

– For years we have been observing the phenomenon of mass education at universities and improperly planned careers. Most often, graduate students are not sure what their future professional life should look like. They go to college for a diploma, instead of for a specific knowledge or profession. The result is obvious – persistent unemployment among young people, no prospects for a solid and satisfying job. According to the data of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education the most frequently chosen fields of study in the academic year 2014/2015 were in turn :
- IT,
- right,
- management,
- economy,
- construction,
- mechanics and mechanical engineering,
- finance and accounting,
- automation and robotics,
- psychology,
- pedagogy.
In the previous year, the top ten of the most popular destinations looked similar and there is no indication that this trend will change in the coming year.
Demand for IT graduates and programmers
In recent years, IT was not only the most frequently chosen field of study, but also the industry with the highest demand for employees. As shown by Work Service data, the deficit for employees in this industry is growing.
– Dynamic technological progress is reflected in the labor market. The average deficit of IT specialists and programmers this year amounts to 34%, and the earnings offered for the start of a career even double those that can be counted on in other industries. Professionals from the automotive and new technologies sector are also in great demand – comments Krzysztof Inglot, Plenipotentiary of the Management Board of Work Service S.A.
Most of the choices made by young people do not match the needs of the labor market
According to Work Service data, a great demand for specialists can be observed in logistics, as well as in energy and renewable technologies. Care and medical professions are also underestimated by young people, as they can also provide an attractive salary.
– Polish society increasingly needs qualified and educated medical personnel. The European market, such as the German market, is also open to professionals in this industry, where demographics visibly changes the labor market, sums up Krzysztof Inglot.
