Do you want to know how to wrap a cell in Excel on Mac, Windows or OpenOffice? Read this article! Find out how to do it here, even on smartphones and tablets.

Excel is one of the most popular and widely used spreadsheets, and one of the most versatile of its kind. However, it is not easy for everyone to use: it is a system that uses complex functions at times, and if you are not used to electronic computing some functions may be unclear. For example, not everyone knows how to use a carriage return in Excel: it is not enough to press the enter key on the keyboard as in other programs.

How to revert to carriage return in Excel on the computer

To go back to Excel’s carriage return on a Mac or PC using the normal Windows version, simply insert a line break by pressing a series of keys. First, open a spreadsheet and then double-click the cell where you want to insert a line break. Then type the text you want, and when you want to return to the carriage, press Alt + Enter at the same time. This will allow Excel to wrap the text on a new line in the same cell and you can continue typing. You can repeat the same operation as many times as you want, depending on how many lines of text you want to create in the same cell. If you are using the free version of Excel, the procedure is the same. So, if you want to carve a line into an Excel cell in OpenOffice or the free online version of Excel, you will do exactly the same as in the Windows version.

In such cases, after carving in Excel, it can be useful to resize the cell to make the text flow more smoothly. To do this, just move the mouse over the separator between cells on the left side of the sheet and, holding down the button, extend the cell by any value.

Cut Excel Cell Automatically

You can also choose to automatically cut a carriage return in an Excel cell by setting the Carriage Text format for all cells you want to work with. This means that the text in each cell will wrap by itself. However, this system only works with the desktop version of Microsoft Excel and cannot be used with the free online version.

To do this, first select the group of cells on which we want to work and for which we need to set the carriage return function in Excel, and then right-click on one of them. A drop-down menu will appear, from which you should select the option “Format Cells”. A screen will appear from which you should select “Alignment” and check the box labeled “Text to return to the carriage”. Confirm the operation by clicking on “OK”. This operation will enable the automatic carriage return feature on all selected cells. Additionally, the height of the cells will automatically adapt to the text so that it will fit within each wrap.

Alternatively, you can activate the “Wrap Text” function in Excel from the Excel toolbar on the Home tab. After selecting the cell containing the text, click the button of the function you are interested in, represented by the icon with a down arrow. Text that has already been written will then automatically wrap.

There is a third option, though more troublesome: to use code.caratt () in conjunction with the concatenate function. The latter combines the arguments into a single text string, while the latter can split into lines. So, in the cell you have to apply two formulas in the following order: = concatena (“text”; code.caratt; “text”).

Carriage return in Excel from smartphones and tablets

If you want to do a carriage return in Excel using the tablet program, you just need to select the cell to which you want to apply this function, then click on the home tab and select the “Carriage Text” button, just like on a computer. On a smartphone, the procedure is a bit more complicated due to the smaller screen size. After selecting the cell you want, then using the drop-down menu at the bottom, select the home tab, then click the “Wrap Text” button.
