1. How to write a CV that will provide you with a job?

All recruiters have the same requirements for a CV – the document should correspond to the job offer. Therefore, your application must be complete and important information arranged in the appropriate sections.

A good CV should consist of sections such as:

  1. Personal and contact details – placed in the header: name and surname, telephone number, e-mail address, as well as the name of the position.
  2. Job summary – a short description of the candidate’s profile. It should be at the top of your CV.
  3. Work Experience – Must include company and job names, terms of service, and responsibilities and achievements.
  4. Skills – it is worth dividing the list of skills into soft and hard skills, entering specialized skills that interest the employer.
  5. Education – in this section focus primarily on education that it is related to the position you are interested in or the requirements of the job offer.
  6. Courses, trainings and certificates – show the employer that you are constantly training and that you have the necessary qualifications to perform a given profession.
  7. Interests – this element is not compulsory on your CV, but it can be beneficial for you. Interesting hobbies say a lot about a candidate.
  8. CV clause —that is, consent to the processing of personal data, which is a mandatory element of a CV in Poland.

You can also add your photo to your CV. It is not obligatory. Remember, however, that photography must be professional. If you don’t have one, don’t take the risk, as adding a random or inappropriate photo will only discourage the recruiter.

The above-mentioned sections (except the data protection clause) are universal elements of any resume and resume. No matter where in the world you apply for a job, points 1 to 7 must be included in your document.

And now I will guide you step by step through the writing process CV.

2. Writing a CV – how to go about it?

The moment. Before you fill a blank document with content, choose the right strategy. Thanks to this, you will not have to endlessly revise your document. Time is money, money doesn’t stink, and you want to smell success. Therefore—

When writing your CV, plan as follows:

1. Choose the right type of CV.

Choose the type of your CV depending on what you want to emphasize and how to present yourself. You can choose to:

Chronological CV – a standard document that is well known to recruiters. It may not be a creative format, but it is safe.

Functional CV – distinguishes key skills from the employer’s point of view. Great CV format for people with little experience. You write more about what you know and what your competences are than about where you have worked so far.

Mixed CV – a format that combines both of the above types of CV. You have the opportunity to present yourself in the most advantageous way by highlighting in your CV what you consider to be your greatest strengths.

2. Read the job offers carefully.

Everything is written there! Most job advertisements list the exact requirements for the candidates, including specific skills, experience and knowledge of foreign languages. You need to include the information the recruiter expects in your CV, so read job offers carefully and use the same phrases in your CV – of course, as long as you really have the competences (a lie in your CV will always come out).

3. Prepare a suitable photo.

If you are going to include a photo on your CV (you don’t have to, if you don’t want to) make sure it is professional. Blurred photos and photos in which you look too private are eliminated.

Now I will show you how to properly write each section of your CV.

3. How do I complete all sections of my CV?

We start at the very top of the document. The last section of the resume described here should be at the bottom.

Personal / contact details – short and to the point

At the top of the CV, i.e. in the header, add some basic information about yourself. You can also center this part of the document. It is important that your name and position are immediately visible, so write them in a larger font

What to write in the CV header?

In the CV header, add:

  • full name
  • job title
  • e-mail address
  • phone number
  • link to your LinkedIn profile (if you have one)

As for your home address, you can safely skip it. Nowadays, no one will send you a job offer by post. And forget about entering your marital status in your CV. This is a thing of the past and completely redundant information.

Job Summary

Job Summary (career goal) is a short description of the candidate’s profile. 3-4 sentences are enough. Only 62% of applicants add this section to the CV, which means that you can have a better document than over of your competitors in the race for employment.

When writing a vocational summary, follow this pattern:

  1. Write who you are (e.g. “I am a sales manager with more than 10 years of experience in the IT industry. “)
  2. List 2-3 professional achievements or important skills (eg” I acquired over 900 clients in 10 months. “)
  3. Write where you want to develop professionally (eg “I am looking for professional challenges in managing a sales team in the IT industry.”)

Work experience in CV

Your previous jobs – this is the content of the Experience section on your resume. At the top of the list of companies should be the one you worked for recently. Then describe your work experience backwards one by one. Let me give you an example.

Here’s how to describe your CV experience:

10.2018 – now Company Accounts Plus

Position: Chief accountant

Responsibilities:

  • keeping full accounting in accordance with applicable regulations, organization and supervision of the correct flow of accounting documents
  • optimization and improvement of the organization of accounting processes
  • preparation of financial statements as well as monthly, quarterly and annual reports
  • supervision over the correctness of tax settlements, responsibility for preparing tax declarations
  • contact with external institutions and preparation of reports

Achievements:

  • I prepared an annual accounting and HR report, which resulted in a 25% reduction in department costs

As you can see, it is not enough to just enter the date and company name. In this section of the CV, it is necessary to list the position you held in a given company and add a list of duties. The employer wants to know what exactly you did in your previous jobs.

It is also worth adding selected professional achievements to your CV. They don’t have to be any particular fireworks. For example, if you managed to organize the office work well, improve the operation of the store, gain new customers or improve the decor of the optician’s shop – great!

Everything you can be proud of counts, although for a recruiter the most interesting thing will be your professional successes, which can be expressed numerically – in profits or new clients that you brought to the company.

Skills in CV

The skills section of the CV is super important. If you look at job offers (one of the first steps in writing a CV) you will surely notice that it lists the competences that the employer expects from the candidate.

Application? You need to post a list of your skills prominently on your resume. Do not enter from momentum: creativity , punctuality , computer skills . First, check if these skills are required at all for the position you are applying for.

To make your CV look polished and legible, break down the list of competencies into soft and hard skills. The former are the features desired by the candidate for a given job, and the latter – technical skills such as:

  • knowledge of programming languages
  • excellent knowledge of SEO principles
  • very good knowledge of Photoshop
  • knowledge of Office tools
  • driving license B

Education in CV

In the education section of your CV, provide only the most important information and do not go into details. It is enough to place here the highest level of your previous education, and omit the earlier stages. Therefore, if you have finished your studies – do not enter your high school CV in your CV, it is obvious. If you have a technical diploma, writing about elementary school will also be unnecessary.

Here is an example of how to describe a section with education in your CV:

2011-2015 Technical School Complex in Kolo

IT technician

Or:

2012 –2017 University of Warsaw

Major: Accounting and Finance

Master’s degree obtained

Courses, training and certifications

Courses and certificates in your CV should be placed in a separate section. To make them stand out. If you have a diploma or a certificate proving a skill, you should show it. Just be careful about one thing – do not include training and courses that are completely unrelated to the job offer you are applying for.

Here is an example of how to create a section with courses and certificates in CV:

Here’s how to enter courses and certificates in your CV:

10.2019 – Certificate of completion of the hairdressing training” Wedding Hairpieces “

02.2020 – Certificate” Children’s hairdresser “

Interests

A well-described hobby in the CV is perfectly complemented by a document in which we write about professional life. This small fragment, posted as the last section of the CV, may be of interest to the recruiter, if you justify in just two sentences, which allows you to pursue your passion. Here is an example:

Here’s how to write a CV about your interests:

I ride a bicycle in my spare time. I like to combine physical effort with exploring new places and admiring the landscapes of eastern Poland, especially the Suwałki region.

CV clause

Even a very good CV is not worth much, if it does not contain a CV clause with consent to the processing of personal data.

4. What does a well-written CV look like?

Now you know which sections to include in your CV and how to fill each of them with appropriate content. Before you can send your CV to the recruiter, however, there are a few more things you need to do. And those aren’t irrelevant details at all.

Choose a readable font for your CV – don’t come up with too much, because it can spoil the professional impression. You can add icons to your CV if you want. Thanks to them, your CV will look interesting.

Another thing is the length of the document. A two-page resume is fine (especially if you have a lot of work experience), but it’s worth trying to create a one-page curriculum vitae. Why? For practical reasons. Then you can be sure that the recruiter will not miss the other page, which may contain important information.

Save your finished CV in the appropriate format. It’s definitely best to use a CV in PDF. When it comes to CV in Word, you have to be careful with it. It is true – such a document is scannable by ATS (application scanning system), but its formatting is not as solid as in the case of PDF.

And finally, the last thing . A professional CV in a foreign language is a challenge for many people. If you need help writing your CV in English, German or Russian, please use the guides below:

Remember that many employers require you to send in a cover letter. And even if not, it is still worth doing, because a good cover letter can make the decision about hiring you, not a competitor.

CV is a document that contains employment history and information about the skills, competences and education of the candidate for the job. A typical CV template consists of these basic sections. Based on the data contained therein, the recruiter decides whether a given person meets the conditions set out in the job advertisement. Remember that a CV is a completely different document than a job application.

The introduction to the CV, i.e. the so-called job summary containing a short description of the candidate, should be placed at the very top of the document. If you do not know what to write about yourself in the CV, just reply to 3 questions: Who are you and what do you do? What are your professional achievements? What is your professional goal? It is enough if the result is a maximum of five simple sentences.

The CV must include all the basic sections, ie: professional summary, skills, experience, education . A resume without a photo is just as valid as a document containing a photo. If you are writing a CV for your first job, make sure that it contains information, for example, on volunteering, student activity or other independent activities related to your future profession.

If you have trouble writing your CV yourself, you can of course get help from an expert. However, it is not worth deciding to do it right away. It is better to think in which program to write a CV , because nowadays these types of tools also offer solid support in creating the content of the document. Thanks to them, you will create a quick CV and avoid large expenses.

Modern CV does not mention the candidate’s marital status, place of birth or nationality. This type of information is even qualified as errors in the CV. If you write a résumé, do not include a photo in it, as in Anglo-Saxon countries (especially in the US) it is believed that the absence of photos in the application document avoids the allegation of discrimination.
