Social media hurts young people! It’s Zuckerberg’s fault! Seriously?

It is thanks to social media that young people have problems. Instagram gets people depressed. Computer games are brainwashing children. Smartphones are a plague, it used to be normal.

These and other statements can be read and heard from many teachers, parents about the broadly understood “new”, though quite old technologies.

I also really like the terms: modern portals and technology flatten relations. People can’t talk to each other anymore. They sit in front of the screens, they don’t meet like they used to.

Really?

We really think there were such deep relationships in the 60-90s? Our grandparents, parents were so relational, open, had such real, sincere relationships? The family was so close? Really, when a couple went out to a restaurant, they both looked deep into each other’s eyes for 2 hours, talked openly? And now? And now everyone is sitting in their cells and not talking to each other. Really?

Of course, to be clear: I do not deny that the so-called SMIT , an acronym that describes three phenomena:

  • social media
  • internet
  • technology

They influence us and are a threat. They can be. But having discussions at the elementary level with the lyrics: It’s Zuckerberg’s fault! It is the cells that destroy relationships, they are an exaggeration, and more so: a simplification, a hypocrisy that will not help at all.

It was once said that Elvis Presley, with his leg and hip movements, led teenagers to the wrong path. It used to be thought that people who wear jeans are rebellious, worthless, lost people. In the past, cigarette smoking was considered sexy, healthy, and a symbol of freedom and masculinity. It used to be believed that people would not leave the house via television. And a landline phone will result in no meetings.

Today Elvis is a symbol of great music. Almost everyone wears jeans and it does not cause drug addiction. Should I continue? It’s amazing how we humans simplify. We don’t think. And that causes problems.

It is not social media and the internet that do harm.

It is our incompetence that hurts. This is our lack of education as parents, adults. So the truth is brutal: we adults are hurting the young generation! We are the ones who cause depression among young people. We are the cause of flattened relationships.

If technology enables us to build a car, it means we have to learn to drive it. Otherwise we will kill others on the way. Education in the world should react faster. Classes SMIT should be compulsory from the 1st grade of primary school.
Lack of systematic education on other phenomena: hatred, public speaking, emotional management is a scandal of education and its main sin.

If technology allows you to dive underwater, then we do not jump into the ocean without preparation. Otherwise, the ocean and the cylinder would kill us.
But in the case of SMIT, we don’t think that anymore. We blame him for the addiction of our children. We criticize Facebook because we realized that it has algorithms that encourage people to stay on this site for as long as possible. Seriously? Really, really? What does a car dealership do? Is he doing anything to get us out of him? What does the director of the movie do? He’s going to make us leave the cinema after 5 minutes and say it’s not worth going to? Is it such a shock? Woow. Facebook wants us to use it. It’s amazing. And TV commercials are made to get you away from the TV, aren’t they?

I wasn’t aware of how Facebook-like platforms work in the past. I had no idea how miraculously I see an ad on Google or Facebook in a topic I just watched on onet.pl or (sic!) About which I was talking to my friend while sitting in a restaurant. I didn’t know algorithms could be eavesdropping on me.

I do not deny that the attractiveness of videos, posts, WhatsApp is absorbing and makes me sit with my head on TikTok or YouTube for several minutes to get sick.

But it’s not the screen that is the problem, but the inability to manage oneself.
Low education equals low awareness. This is the cause of the problems.

It was once thought that heavy industry and machinery in factories would cause unemployment. It only happened for a moment. The progress of civilization causes a shortage of labor, not the other way around. But only on condition that the changes take place in the education, law and minds of people.

So let’s think. Let’s read. Let’s watch smart movies and documents. Let’s talk. Let’s develop.

Without it, SMIT will plunge us. Along with the development of technological civilization, mental and competence development must go hand in hand. We can cut off and go to the Bieszczady Mountains. You can. This is one of the options. The farther from SMIT, the safer. How long is the question. What if he gets to know a certain SMIT. Will he be able to live with it?

Such a thought.

What’s your thought? What do you agree with? What do you disagree with?

I am curious about your opinion. Let me know in the comment 🙂
